Georgette SPETHMAN Obituary

GEORGETTE MARIE MAGY SPETHMANN On Sunday, December 18, 2022, Georgette Marie Magy Spethmann, loving mother of her son, Dominique, and her twins, Claude Spethmann (Christie Carroll) and Danièle Spethman (Tom Neelands); and her grandson, Jackson Flynn; passed away peacefully at the age of 96, two months shy of her 97th birthday; and a week after Dominique passed away (December 10, 2022). Born on March 1, 1926, on the French Concession, in Shanghai, China, Georgette immigrated to Cannes, France in her mid-20s, where she met and married Erwin Spethmann (deceased 1989). They lived in Hamburg, Germany for a few years prior to immigrating to Canada in 1956, where they made their home in Toronto. Georgette was a fearlessly independent, intelligent, determined, hardworking person with an unwavering sense of loyalty and integrity. She had a classic French style and was a wonderful cook, hosting regular Sunday lunches with family and with friends. This precious time spent together was always lively and engaging. We learned from her the enjoyment of good food, good friends and thoughtful conversation. Claude and I were blessed to have been loved and raised by a woman of such strong character and wit. We look forward to celebrating Georgette at a celebration of life event to be held in March 2023 on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Bill McMurray Residence, 180 Sheridan Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, in the name of Dominique Spethmann.

Georgette was our beloved translator for many years at Orchestras Canada/Orchestres Canada, and she brought not only a deep care for the work but also a passion for music and people. She led an amazing life, and we were proud to call her a friend.

Georgette was a key member of our "Cercle Français" that met weekly in person before the pandemic. Here are photos from when we had the use of space at Briton House. I apologize that they are blurry. We continued on Zoom during the pandemic, and Georgette joined us two or three times there. We all remember Georgette fondly and are very sorry to hear that she has passed. Please accept our deepest condolences for your loss. Georgette contributed actively to the Cercle and had many interesting stories to tell us about her life. In these photos, we are celebrating her 94th birthday !!! Kathleen Smith
