Gerald ROSE Obituary
ROSE, Gerald Ferris B.A., C.M. (Member of the Order of Canada).
Died peacefully at home in Saskatoon on Thursday, March 25, 1999. Beloved husband of Gladys Ruth and treasured father and father-in-law of Kathryn and Gerald Cooper, Dr. Toby Rose and Leslie Klein, Naomi Rose and Stanley Sinai, and Dr. David Rose and Marlene Kates. He was the cherished ;Muppy; to thirteen grandchildren, Rebecca and Mark Cooper, Jonathan, Solomon and Benjamin Klein, Joanne, Hayley and Adam Sinai; Mira, Aaron, Isaac, Noah and Joseph Kates Rose. He was a dear brother and brother-in-law of Myrna and the late Harry Levin of Winnipeg and Zora and the late Dr. Nathan Gropper of Vancouver. His many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews will miss him very much. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Elsie Rose, and his in-laws, Harry and Marcia Sarlin. His children's in-laws, the late Abraham and Clara Cooper, Dr. Joel and Ann Klein of Manchester, N.H., and Marvin and Estelle Kates of Toronto held him in high regard. Gerry was born in Saskatoon on October 26, 1920. He was educated at King Edward Public School and City Park Collegiate Institute, and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with OB.A. (Science) in 1940. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and served as Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, stationed in Aldershot, Great Britain, from 1941 through 1945. After the War, he joined his father's dry-cleaning and fur business. Arthur Rose Limited and Rose Art Furs, and served as General Manager and President until he sold the dry-cleaning business in 1982 and wound up the fur business in 1985. Recently honoured for a lifetime of volunteer work with an appointment to the Order of Canada, Gerry was to have been invested as a Member of the Order by the Governor-General on April 14, 1999 in Ottawa. His citation to the Order of Canada listed his accomplishments with the Saskatchewan Heart Fund, the 1989 Jeux Canada Games, the 1979 Western Canada Summer Games, the St. Paul's Hospital Board and the Saskatoon Economic Development Board. Many other organizations were the beneficiaries of his devotion and hard work. Equally important to him were his contributions to the Jewish community of Saskatoon and Canada, especially his instrumental role in establishing the Saskatoon Jewish Foundation. Always guided by principles of Jewish ethics, especially tzedakah, Gerry worked to further social justice in the world through his actions and generosity. He was intensely curious about people, the scientific world, and business. A golfer, bridge player, traveller, skilled amateur electrician and handyman, he was a wonderful friend to all who knew him. Funeral Services were held at Congregation Agudas Israel, 715 McKinnon Avenue, Saskatoon on Friday, March 26, 1999. Pallbearers were Gerry Cooper, Les Klein, Stan Sinai, Joanne Sinai, Rebecca Cooper, Mark Cooper and Jonathan Klein. Honourary Pallbearers were Marlene Kates, Sidney Buckwold, Karl Germek, Dr. Steven Goluboff; Arnold Golumbia, Sam Laimon, Dr. Sam Landa, Grant Scharfstein, Dr. Jack Sugarman and Cliff Wright. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate gifts to the Saskatoon Jewish Foundation, 715 McKinnon Avenue, Saskatoon, S7H 2G2 or any other charity of choice.
