The family of Dr. Gerald Wallace announces with sorrow his passing at the North Bay General Hospital, on Tuesday, November 23, 1999. Gerald Milton Wallace was the son of the late Milton John Wallace and Elizabeth Ann ;Lovie Robinson. Beloved husband of Jo Wallace (Cooper). Devoted father of Jamie (late Brenda Fielding) of Sudbury, Lovie Ferguson (Dan) of North Bay, and Jay of Toronto. Loving grandfather of Jeffrey, Kristen and Gordon Wallace, Scott and Jennifer Ferguson, and Kate, Eliza and Charlie Wallace. His sister Audrey Bennie (Al) and his brothers George and Ken (Reta) predeceased Dr. Wallace. Mourning his loss are his brothers Dr. Harold (Elinor) and Wilfred ;Bae (Miriam) and his sisters-in-law Sybil Wallace and Marion ;Mamie MacInnis. Many special nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews will sadly miss Uncle Gerry. Dr. Wallace's friends will miss his loyalty, companionship and trust. His patients, who were his extended family, will remember his dedication, his enormous capacity for care and his professionalism. Gerry was born in North Bay September 27, 1914. That same year his family purchased property on Trout Lake where they boated from the head of the lake to spend their summers at the cottage. The family home remains at Trout Lake today. He was educated in North Bay and then went to the University of Toronto where he earned his Medical Degree. From 1942-46, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. On his return from duty, he continued his studies in General Surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto. Dr. Wallace, along with his wife and family, settled in North Bay in 1950, where he practiced medicine for 45 years, with his twin brother, Dr. Harold Wallace. His medical career included such duties as the Medical Officer of Health for Widdifield Township, District Coroner and Plant Physician for DuPont Canada for 25 years, and the Ontario Northland Railway for 43 years. When he was not Doctoring, he loved to be with his family at Trout Lake, where he would spend time fishing, picnicking in Turtle Lake with his friends and family or tending to his bountiful garden. His garden provided many hours of quiet meditation in the early morning hours. The image of him in the garden did not look at all like the man in the three-piece suit, Doctor's bag in hand, heading off to a house call, the office, or the hospital. The Wallace tennis court provided fun times of friendly competition and sibling one upmanship. Fortunate to have been able to travel to many parts of the world, Trout Lake remained his favorite place and his home. Dr. Wallace embraced life, we all will appreciate the life he gave us, we shall mourn him but celebrate and are thankful for his life and our memories, for they are cherished and will be with us forever. The Wallace family will receive friends at the Martyn Funeral Home, 464 Wyld Street, North Bay, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services to celebrate Dr. Gerald's life will be held in St. John's Anglican Church, Main Street, North Bay, where he sang as a choir boy with his brothers, on Saturday, November 27th at 11 a.m. Cremation will follow at Forest Lawn Crematorium. If desired, donations to St. John's Anglican Church Building Fund will be gratefully acknowledged as expressions of sympathy.
