GERARD HOFSTEDE Obituary

(March 31, 1935, at Ootmarsum, The Netherlands - January 18, 2026, at Windsor, Ontario, Canada) Gerard was born in Ootmarsum, The Netherlands, on March 31, 1935. He was one of eleven siblings that were always very close. He received a Bachelor of Medicine degree (part 1) from the University of Nijmegen, and he worked as part of a team identifying Dutch war dead in England and Wales as part of his military service. This work was important to him, and later in life he visited the Mill Hill cemetery in England where the fallen soldiers that he helped to identify were buried. Gerard and Cornelia (née Garsten) married on December 3, 1969, and in May 1970, they immigrated to Toronto, Canada. Gerard worked at the Globe and Mail Newspaper as an operator of a mainframe computer system in the 1970s and then as a computer programmer until his retirement. Both their children were born and raised in Toronto. Gerard will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and sense of humour. He loved outdoor activities such as camping, cross-country skiing, and gardening. His interests included travelling, fencing, languages, biology, classical music, and spending time with his family and friends. Gerard is survived by his wife, Cornelia; son, Jesse (Priscilla); grandchildren, Oliver and Theodore; daughter, Hannah (Eugene); sister, Truus; brother, Ton (Toos); and many nieces and nephews. Thank you for the kindness and "grapjes," dad. You will be missed. Per Gerard's wishes, cremation has taken place.

I am sorry I missed seeing the obituary. The Globe and Mail was blessed with a great group of people who worked together as real team.
Gerry was a dedicated and skilled programmer, always looking for better ways to accomplish tasks. His knowledge of text manipulation programming tools was an important contribution to the creation of the InfoGlobe product - the first full text newspaper storage and retrieval system in the world. One of our major software suppliers created a product enhancement based directly on a suggestion that Gerry made to them. We once attended a course together at U of T where Gerry wrote an assignment on issues relating to trans-border data flow, which the course TA tried to reject as an uninteresting topic. Wrong: it was significant then and now.
I am glad to have had Gerry work for and with me - a good friend and great person.
