It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gerd Erich Siewert - a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and educator - who departed this life peacefully, on July 9, 2025, at the age of 81. Gerd was born on August 31, 1943, in Freiburg, Germany, to Klara and Kurt Siewert, during the turmoil of World War II. Gerd immigrated to Canada in 1966 and pursued his passion for languages and education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts at Brock University in St. Catharines, followed by a Master's degree in Education from SUNY Buffalo. He continued with advanced graduate studies before returning to Brock to complete his teaching certification. Gerd was a devoted husband to Luisa, his loving partner of 40 years; and a proud father to Michelle (Warner) and Martine (Jason) from his first marriage; as well as a caring stepfather to Angela (Jack) and Anthony (Maggie). He was a deeply engaged and affectionate grandfather to Gabriella, Roan, and Claire, and to Maxwell, Xavier, Evan and Brandon - each of whom he cherished and spoke about often with pride and joy. A lifelong learner and educator, Gerd built a distinguished 35-year career teaching and mentoring students in the field of language education. He was known for his warmth and dedication at both Ridley College in St. Catharines, and at Royal St. George's College in Toronto. Beyond his professional life, Gerd found great joy in the natural world and the arts. He was an avid hiker, swimmer, traveller, and daily dog-walker. He had a keen eye for photography - capturing images of wildlife, landscapes, travel, and especially his grandchildren. A lover of classical music, Gerd had an encyclopedic knowledge of his favorite composers. His passion for history, politics, art, and culture was boundless, and he delighted in sharing thoughtful discussions with friends and family alike. Gerd's unwavering love for his family, his devotion to teaching, and his quiet generosity touched the lives of many. His kindness, intellect, and spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him. Geh jetzt zu den Engeln, Papa, und ruhe für immer in Frieden. A private funeral service is being held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Sue's Rescue & Responsible Rehoming (
