GLADYS REEVES Obituary

(née Freethy, December 13,1921 - January 31, 2026) Gladys passed peacefully on to the Lord in the Sunnybrook Veterans Wing on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the amazing age of 104. She leaves behind three children, Richard Reeves (Jill Dickie), Holly Hilborn (the late John Hilborn) and Maryl Towle (the late Roderick Towle); as well as nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gladys was born in Winnipeg on December 13, 1921. She grew up in small northern railroad towns where her father worked as a secretary of the YMCA. She attended Moulton Ladies College where she excelled - after skipping two grades, she left to study Physiotherapy at the University of Toronto, working in the hospital every day at only 18. Gladys deployed overseas on the troop ship HMS Mauritania in 1944. She served at #22 Canadian General Hospital in Bramshott, England, treating infantry, tank corps and air force. When asked to write of her war experience for the Canadian Fighter Pilots Association she said "There were good times and sad times, but my life was enriched in many ways … the most notable and important was meeting a great guy and an ideal husband." Richard "Dick" Reeves (d. 2010) was a spitfire pilot in the RAF/RCAF and became her loving husband of 64 years. Gladys lived a long and full life. Her family and friends enjoyed suppers and weekends with her and Dick in Toronto, and at their cottage in Muskoka. We shall miss our mom, but are grateful that we had her as long as we did. Service at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. West, February 25th, at 1 p.m. Private interment. Special thanks to the caring team at Sunnybrook Veterans Wing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Veterans Highest Priority Need Fun Sunnybrook Hospital.

Maryl, so many good memories growing up with both our moms. Such incredible and long lives they both had, their educations, the ocean voyages, the army service contributions and eventually families (with cottages). We were so fortunate to have them as our role models.
