CARLSON
CARLSON, Glenn Moffatte June 8, 1925 - January 28, 2010
At Sunnybrook Hospital. Beloved nephew of the late Nelson James Carlson and his wife, the late Margaret Meyers Eddis Carlson. Dearly loved step-cousin - and brother-of-the-heart - to the Rev. Charles W. Eddis (Nancy) of Montreal, Edith Eddis Land (Brian) of Georgetown (ON), Joan Eddis- Topolski (Aleks) of Ottawa and Susan Eddis Crease Morales (Martin) of Toronto. Treasured family member to their children and grandchildren. Glenn was predeceased by his wife Anita.
He is also mourned by Michael Crease (Andreina) of Oakville, the Berton family of Vancouver, and his faithful weekly visitor Barbara Vodopiutz of Toronto, a friend for many years.
During World War II, Glenn served as a medical orderly with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (RCAMC) while still a teenager and made scores of Atlantic crossings on hospital troopships. After a stint at the University of Toronto, Glenn had a long career in the investment business, including Burns Fry.
Glenn truly lived for the beautiful and for history. A Cordon Bleu chef, he loved Sibelius and other classical music, Shakespeare, folktales, the ballet, the genealogies of the European royals (about whom he chatted as if they were the neighbours), antiques, silver, textiles and china. Part of his soul lived in the eighteenth century. Having grown up in the Ottawa Valley, he was fluent in French and peppered his English conversation with bon mots, stories and jokes from the area. Latin was another of Glenn's lifelong languages. For the younger generation, Glenn was a good-humoured, brainy and eccentric uncle figure.
The family gratefully acknowledges the loving support given by Tim Eddis (son of Charles and Nancy), his wife Lisa, and their sons, Max and Jake. Glenn chose to give Tim his power of attorney. After six days in hospital, Tim was with Glenn when he died in Sunnybrook'S ICU of pneumonia and heart complications.
We salute the staff of L Wing in Sunnybrook's Veteran's Hospital who were so kind and attentive to Glenn and helped him to enjoy the last period of his life there, from April 2008.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in late February. Please send condolences to Charles Eddis, Montreal:
