Gordon CHAMPION Obituary

GORDON CHAMPION, P.Eng. August 9, 1930 - November 2, 2022 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved Gordon on November 2, 2022, after a short illness, surrounded by his family. Gordon was born on August 9, 1930, in Rampton, England to George and Frances (nee Newton); and leaves behind his 'darling' Marlene, adored wife of 63 years; his two sons, Robert and Mark; daughters-in-law, Kathryn and Debbie; and his five treasured grandchildren, Nigel, Franny, Drew, Rachelle, and Brett. Predeceased by his parents; and brother, Tony; Gordon will be remembered by many close members of the Champion and Bond families in England. Gordon arrived in Canada at Pier 21, Halifax in 1952 and soon after joined Canadian Pacific Steamship Co in Montreal. He travelled the eastern seaboard and Caribbean, working his way up to Chief Engineer, with a combined steam and diesel ticket. He moved to Toronto in the late 50s, where he joined Laurie & Lamb Engineers, managing their Toronto office. In the early 70s, he established DG Champion Engineering and became a highly recognized marine and power generation expert. Based on his long engineering experience, he was granted Professional Engineer status. Gordon's biggest claim to fame is his contribution to the restoration of Toronto's heritage steam paddle wheel ferryboat, The Trillium. Gordon found common ground with everyone he met and took care of fostering and maintaining both new and long-standing friendships. His enthusiasm for celebrating any occasion was legendary and his generosity of spirit was boundless. The family would like to thank Dr. J. Rosenberg and the staff at Michael Garron Hospital and his care workers, Julianna and Nelda, for their exceptional care and support during Gordon's illness. The family will host a Celebration of Life on Sunday, November 13, 2022, in the Conservatory Room, 955 Millwood Rd., Toronto from 2 - 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Michael Garron Hospital.

Gord and I had several moments across from the table. Gord's tenure and recognition in the industry was always the one that people would believe.. instead of me.. the young 58 yr old !! Even if he had a small smile afterwards... he would indicate that I gave him a good run.. but.. Gord would stay on top!!

Gordon was a great mentor of mine and to other young up and coming engineers and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and learn from his many years of experience. He spent his later years in the engineering profession working to share his experience with young engineers and students and took us on a number of great outings to the Trillium, Algolake and other sites in the GTA area. He will be greatly missed and I will think of him often during ongoing work in the power generation field which we both much enjoyed. Sincere condolences to the Champion family from the Coopers, IPowerE organization and Hatch.

"It´s raining like Billy be damned!" One of Gordon´s favourite sayings. So sorry Marlene - and family - that it has finally seriously rained on his parade. For, really, that´s what his life was. An ongoing show of grit, determination, resolution: all with enthusiasm and generosity. Gordon was the most organized man I ever had the pleasure of calling a friend. Everything in its time and place. Just look at his memento-filled home and that cleaned-out workroom at 955. And he had several priorities. He got to them all. Family, of course; surviving some 8 years being tossed about in a ship´s engine room in the Atlantic and Caribbean; paying back that $17 or $37 government loan accepted in 1952 on a Halifax dock; fixing that 1930´s MG and all those bigger engines from Baffin Island to Madagascar and, of course, the one on the Trillium.
We shall miss your humour and resilience old friend. RIP.

I knew Gordon through his impressive work on the Toronto ferry, TRILLIUM.

Some decades ago, spurred on by enquiries into my family´s history and former business, Polson Iron Works, the company that built the TRILLIUM, I met Gordon and learned of not just the expertise but the ingenuity that he had brought to bear on the problem of how to restore the old, abandoned hulk that was the TRILLIUM in those days, nearly 50 years ago.

Now I look at the TRILLIUM and am well aware of the debt we owe people like Gordon whose creativity and knowledge have enabled the restoration of a unique piece of Toronto history. Thank you, Gordon, for this lasting memento and for your skill, enthusiasm and determination. It was a pleasure knowing you.

Jack and I extend our very deep sympathy to Marlene and family in this time of acute loss.

It is with great sadness I learned of the passing of our dear friend Gordon. My husband Dick and Gordon shared a love of all things to do with Engineering and we enjoyed many happy times together. His love of parties and gatherings in any form are so memorable, including the cricket match behind their home on Bayview Heights. My family join me in sending my Deepest Sympathy to Marlene and all your family. A donation will be made to Michael Garron Hospital in his memory.

Dear Marlene, Robert, Mark and families, it saddens me to hear about the passing of my dear old friend, mentor, tennis buddy and work colleague Gordon. I know we all have to go sometime but not Gorgon, he was supposed to last forever, always supportive, cheering me on, giving needed advice, always available and sharp as a tack to the end. I spoke to him only a few months ago about the passing of Gus and we caught up. He will be missed by everyone he touched in both his amazing career and life.

Dear Robert,

I have just seen your father´s obituary in today´s paper. I am so sorry to hear of his passing; he was such a good man. Back in the East York days we often both showed up at the same Council and Planning Board meetings, I for the LPOA and Leaside, and your father representing Bennington Heights, always with a strong point of view and well-expressed ideas.

We need more people like him, especially these days.

My condolences to you and your family.

It is with profound sadness that I have learned of the passing of my dear friend, Gordon. I had the pleasure of his, and Marlene´s, company recently, never anticipating it would be my last with Gordon. I have so many good memories spanning the fifty years we were friends, I could fill a book. He was a good and generous friend and I will miss him greatly. I send my sincere condolences to Marlene and the rest of Gordon´s family. Rest In Peace, dear friend.
