Gordon GIBSON Obituary

GORDON FULERTON GIBSON, OBC August 23, 1937 - November 10, 2023 Gordon was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. A businessman, writer, and politician. A tireless and level-headed advocate for democracy, equality, and Western Canada. A mariner, a learner, and a handyman. A wise and wonderful person, and a cherished friend to many. Unfailingly respectful and ever curious, he never missed an opportunity to listen and learn. Gordon is survived by his loving wife Jane Baynham, as well as his children Michelle, Marc, Melissa (Matt Frey), Paige (Chris Straub) and Adrian (Sean Hepple), and step-children Kelsey (Sam) and David. He also leaves behind 12 adoring grandchildren and his sister Louanne Labbe, along with many other family members and friends. Gordon was predeceased by his dear Kilby in 2009. He will be forever remembered, and deeply missed. Service to be held Tuesday, November 21st at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's (Kerrisdale) Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting independent journalism by subscribing to a Canadian news media outlet of your choice. It was an honour for me to be acquainted with Gordon. I knew him for five decades, starting during his menthol cigarette-smoking days as right hand to the Hon. Arthur Laing in Ottawa. On Art's behalf he offered me, a mere teenager, my first job in politics "interning" for a year on that revered B.C. Minister's political staff. I hold Gordon responsible for instilling and reinforcing the political 'bug' in me. Since then as a lifelong "politico", I gladly credit Gordon for encouraging my commitment to public affairs as a result of his fine, and enduring, example.

Gordon was an unbeatable inspiration mainly, but not only, because of his savvy political judgment and dedication to Canada - especially to The West in Confederation. The rigor of his passion for public policy was matched by few; the vigor of the positions he espoused concerning constitutional, indigenous and (among others) electoral reform was admired by many.

I consider myself fortunate to have had the privilege of friendship with "The Best Premier British Columbia Never Had": Gordon F. Gibson.

Condolences to all the Family. May his soul find peace...
