Gordon REID Obituary

GORDON G. REID Peacefully at home in his 90th year. Gordon is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy; his daughter, Jacqueline; sons, Scott and Blake; step-children, Daryl, Laurie, and Kevin; grand-children, Kelsey, Devan, Sarah, Max, Nathan, and Ryan; and great-granddaughter, Dylan. In keeping with Gordon's wishes, a private family service will occur. Gordon Reid was the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Canadian retail success Giant Tiger. Mr. Reid was active in the Canadian retail industry throughout his life, starting with his first job in 1946 when he was only 13 years old. In 1961, Mr. Reid opened the first Giant Tiger store in Ottawa's ByWard Market, and six years later, the very first Giant Tiger franchise rolled out. Today, Giant Tiger has over 265 stores across most of Canada and employs over 10,000 people. Gordon received the prestigious Retail Council of Canada's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 and Ottawa's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Mr. Reid previously held Board positions for the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the International Mass Retail Association, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, and the Ottawa Heart Institute. Mr. Reid was known for his strong sense of community. He is famous for saying, 'When your customers are your neighbours, you want to do things right.' In lieu of flowers, donations in Gordon's memory may be made to TROtt--Therapeutic Riding Association of Ottawa-Carleton, ottawatherapeuticriding.ca/give/
