GORDON SPRATT Obituary

February 13, 1931 - March 10, 2025 Gordon lived a fully engaged life of 94 years, with his passions being entrepreneurship and engineering, fitness and sports, automobiles, and all things musical. Gordon was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, to parents, Maynard and Beryl (nee Morrow), along with his younger brother, Lawrence. At the outbreak of WWII, the family moved to live with Gordon's grandparents in Ottawa while Maynard was initially stationed in Petawawa, Ontario, then they moved to Debert, Nova Scotia, before he shipped off to Europe. Gordon spent the remainder of the war years in Ottawa, and when his father returned from the war, they moved back to Regina where Gordon completed high school while playing trombone in various bands and even the Regina Symphony, and creating various mechanical contraptions. In 1949, Gordon entered Civil Engineering at McGill University in Montreal (as his father had done in 1916) to complete his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Gordon had his own car while at McGill, as he was "car crazy" from a young age. Gordon actively continued playing his trombone in bands during this period. While at McGill, he met the love of his life, Myrna Ruth Miller, who was enrolled in the Royal Victoria Nursing School (associated with McGill), while out on a blind date. In 1957, they were married, then moved to Vancouver to start a family and were faithful to each other to the end. Douglas Gordon was born in 1958, Derek William in 1961, and Kara Lynn in 1963. During those early years in Vancouver, Gordon continued playing music, cutting a record with his Dixieland band, The False Creek Flats, in 1963. After working for other employers, Gordon started his own Consulting Engineering firm in 1964, which he stayed involved with until the age of 85. Gordon loved practicing engineering and especially running his business. He was also passionate about golf and tennis, and was a runner, swimmer and a cyclist, riding his bicycle around town to his business meetings and job sites. Gordon loved his Nash, Chrysler and Mercedes car brands almost as much his family. We had our own motorized transportation in our youth, as he also helped us build go karts and minibikes. He always made sure his spouse of almost 68 years, Myrna, had everything she desired for in her life, being seen by her side, supporting her as they grew old together. Collectively they did a superb job of nurturing and supporting their family members in countless ways. Gordon will be missed by his spouse, Myrna; children, Douglas (Florence), Derek (Cheryl), and Kara (Steve); grandchildren, Justin (Genesis), Nathan, Allyson (Denis), Perry, Colin, Rachel (Johnnie) and Evan; and his seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence. There will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to The VanDusen Botanical Garden in memory of Gordon would be appreciated (form-renderer-app.donorperfect.io/give/vbga-donate).
