Gordon STEWART Obituary

Gordon Stewart
With profound sadness, the family of Gordon Van Buren Stewart shares the news of his passing. He was born in Montreal on July 16, 1932 and died in Mississauga on Sept 19, 2016. Predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy; his sister, Audrey; and his twin brother, Bob; he is survived by his wife of 28 years, Bonni; and his 4 daughters and their husbands, Virginia and Roy, Lorna and Peter, Maureen and Mike, Gail and Prakash. Gord had 9 grandchildren who he loved dearly, Sarah, Morgan, Cassie, Cameron, Ashley, Daniel, Pamela, Jordan and Julien, as well as 11 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Madeleine, Wesley, Dorothy, Oliver, Lyle, Carolyn, Peter, Ryan, Brianna, and Jackson. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Gord's career began in London Ont. as a salesman for Singer Sewing Machines, but it wasn't long before he was recruited by the Diversey Corp. to open and manage various divisions around the world. Countless family hours have been spent reminiscing about their lives in France, Hawaii, Chicago and Iowa, all of them special and memorable in their own way. Gord moved to Mississauga in 1974, first as President, and eventually as co- owner of Tri-Canada, where he was the driving force until his retirement in 1988. Never one to sit still, and always one with an opinion, Gord then turned his attention to a multitude of public and charity organizations. For all of his efforts, Gord was recognized with a Civic Award of Recognition from the City of Mississauga as well as the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, awarded to outstanding residents of Mississauga. He was an active campaigner for the Progressive Conservative Party and a dedicated fundraiser for the Trillium and Credit Valley Hospitals. His love of flying led to the formation of Westmark, his company that bought, refurbished and sold airplanes. He was also the owner of the National Racquetball Club for several years.Gord loved to sing, and in his later years, was an active member of four Barbershop Choruses, often out singing 5 evenings a week. Most famous was a video taken one winter's evening in a Tim Hortons by a customer who had walked into the store where the group had spontaneously broken into song. It received over 1 million hits on You Tube and the memory brought a huge smile to his face. Funeral services will be held on Sept. 26th at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church, 151 Lakeshore Road West, Mississauga. A celebration of life will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
