Grace WAKELIN Obituary

Grace Lucile Wakelin (nee Clarke)
20 December 1922, Hamilton -
20 May 2016, Toronto

Only daughter of Lavice and Donald Clarke, Lucile earned her B.A. in English from McMaster University. She married English Flight Lieutenant Roy Wakelin in 1944 and accompanied him to Oxford where she lived with his family until the end of the War. Returning to Hamilton in 1945, she organized the Canadian Branch of Wolsey Hall, a correspondence school for British servicemen. She then joined the Hamilton School Board, teaching high school English.
Separated from Roy Wakelin, in 1967 she moved to Toronto to teach English in Grades 9, 11 and 13 where she was regarded with great affection by her students. At Malvern, she met the love of her life, Gerald Dunlevie, and they married in 1988, the year both she and Gerald retired from teaching.
Upon retirement she was free to pursue a lifelong ambition by returning to university at the Pontifical Institute to pursue studies in mediaeval French history. She traveled to Namur, in Belgium for her research, and in 1995 Lucile received a Doctorate in Mediaeval French history, at the age of 73. She then turned her attention to the stock market where she demonstrated considerable financial acumen. Lucile was also a great theatre buff, loved tending her spectacular gardens in Toronto and Elora, and was an avid amateur ornithologist.
In 2010, Lucile and Gerald moved to Belmont House, where Lucile received fine care from the skilled and dedicated staff. Lucile passed away peacefully, after a life well- lived. Surviving her are her loving husband, Gerald; her brother, Kenneth Clarke of Sidney, BC; his children, Paul, Susan and Ian; and their spouses and children.
Funeral Mass will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 3055 Bloor Street West at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, 28 May.

Mrs. Wakelin was a wonderful teacher, very inspiring. I did this pen and ink drawing of her in the 1970s. May she rest in peace.
