Graham JACKSON Obituary

GRAHAM P. JACKSON It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing in Montréal, Québec, of Graham Peter Jackson on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. He leaves his beloved wife, Suzanne Doris Garneau, after 60 wonderful years of marriage. Graham was predeceased by his son, Mark MacKenzie in 1997. He was the loving father of Léon Garneau (Cynthia Logan) and Frances Nora (E.C. Tweedy). He also leaves his sister, Marion Hughes (Lawrence), step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and one great-grandnephew. Graham was born in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire in the UK on April 27, 1935. He attended Munro College in Jamaica and Ashbury College, Bishop's University, McGill University and University of New Brunswick in Canada. He was a passionate educator and concluded his career as Director of Instructional Services at the Central QC School Board. He was very active in the Anglican Church. He was a lay minister and was made a Canon in 2006. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the entire team at St. Margaret's Residential Centre. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday October 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity: 31 rue des Jardins in Québec City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Citadel Foundation. Please mention that the funds are to go to the Mark MacKenzie Jackson Fund.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Graham Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a practicum supervisor in the School of Education at Bishop's University from 2001 to 2018. He was dedicated to Bishop´s University and in particular to the many generations of pre-service teachers in the School of Education he mentored, leaving a mark not only on his community but also on the English-Language Education sector as a whole.

We would like to honor him with the following tribute from a current practicum supervisor and friend, Mr. Tom Matthews.

Graham graduated in ´61, I believe, with honours, from the School of Education, taught almost entirely by the legendary Dr. Jefferis. He was in a class of six students and always remembered the rigour required of a teacher as exemplified by Dr. Jeff and subsequent Deans and professors in the School, later the Faculty of Education.

He had a background of counselling, too, from McGill and he very successfully merged those fields in the classroom during his teaching career.

He was later to go on to become the Director of Instructional Services for the School Board serving a vast area of Québec, now known as the Central Quebec School Board. With schools scattered in the far distant reaches of our province, he worked tirelessly to bring the necessary resources to principals and teachers setting the very best example of the unselfish, dedicated educator and committing himself to bringing the very best to the students that his board served.
In his very limited spare time, he served on countless committees and boards and chaired the Québec Superior Council´s Protestant Committee for some years. He led conferences and workshops and presented papers at the national level - all with sagacity, grace and a very great deal of humour!
In all his work and travels, Bishop´s was never very far from his heart and whether fact finding in the School Authority of the Orkney Islands or researching multi-level classroom teaching in Scotland, he always worked Bishop´s into his presentations, always with great pride.
In his retirement, he committed himself to try to repay his debt to the field which had brought him so much reward by enthusiastically serving as a Student Teacher Supervisor, visiting schools far away from the campus in the regions of Québec that he had come to love, sitting in the classrooms with the young people he so much admired.

Our profession has lost a great resource and Bishop´s a number one `booster´!

Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends on behalf of the School of Education at Bishop´s University.

A wonderful memorial service for an exceptional man. I am grateful I was able to attend and listen to the many anecdotes, reminisce with colleagues and realize not only how Mr. Graham touched my life, but just how far reaching he touched others throughout his lifespan. Sincere condolences to Suzanne, Leon and Nora. We all need more Graham Peter Jackson´s, and bowties, in the world.

We were saddened to hear the news about Graham. As Director of Instructional Services for the EQRSB he often visited us in Metis Beach and gave us tremendous support over the years. Countless teachers and students benefited from his dedicated involvement in the education sector of Québec. He and Suzanne became dear friends over the years; we so enjoyed reading Graham's Christmas letters. He certainly was a gentleman, a scholar, and a fine judge of whiskey (ahhh-Glenmorangie). And he had a wonderful sense of humour. Our heartfelt condolences to Suzanne and the family.

I would like to extend my sincere condoleances to Mr. Jackson's family. He was part of a group of people from the Anglican Diocese of Quebec who interviewed me in 2007 for the position of Executive Director. After getting the position, I greatly enjoyed his humor and knowledge during many diocesan meetings. He was very committed to serve his Anglican community and from the other messages I have read, service seems to have been a important part of his life. He can now rest in peace.

I have many happy memories of Graham and the wonderful way he had, as an educator, of making people feel valued and understood.

Graham´s jokes, limericks and general good humour livened up the most boring or tiresome church meeting.

He was a kind, caring, compassionate and committed Christian. I learned a great deal about life and Faith from the time we spent together.

I send my condolences to the family and my great love to Suzanne.

I am very sorry to hear that Graham recently passed away. He was the person who recommended that I enroll at Algonquin College in their Business Administration Program. I am glad that I did as it took my life in a different direction.
Graham made time to see me, I was working at the time, and guide me back to my studies and a rewarding and fulfilling life.
Thank you for your support.

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Jackson's passing and send my sincere condolences to his family. He was one of my most favourite teachers at Quebec High School in the early 60's where he taught North American Literature and opened up a whole new world for us. I also was lucky to be a French student of Mr. Jackson's wife in elementary school in Quebec City. May your fond memories of the years spent together warm your hearts for years to come.

My deepest condolences to his family.
He was my guidance councillor in high school and used to drive me and my sister and brothers to Alexander Wolfe when we lived on rue du golf.
He had a very big impact on my life. When I arrived at QHS, I had difficulty adjusting and he would book me in for chats.
Such a special man and no doubt made a large impact on everyone´s lives. Rest In Peace.

Deepest condolences to Mr. Jackson's family. He was my home room teacher in Grade 10 at QHS and Nora was a good friend of my daughter, Tammy. I will always remember his reaction in English class when, just after he read "Et tu, Brutus" from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, the police sirens sounded outside. Needless to say, it brought all of us to fits of laughter. Graham preached at our tiny chapel in Lac Beauport and was someone I always admired. My deepest sympathies to his extended family. We have lost a good man.
