SYLVESTER, Grant D.
At his home on Thursday, February 25th, 1999, following a tenacious fight against cancer. Grant is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Olga, his children, Robert of Mississauga, Ont., Theresa of Dayton, Ohio, Daniel of Thornhill, Ont. and five grandchildren. Grant was born in Sainte Rose du Lac, Manitoba and received his early education in Portage La Prairie, Brandon and Winnipeg. He graduated from the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan in 1952 with a BA liberal arts. Notre Dame recently announced that he will be the 1999 recipient of its Humanitarian Award. He was a member of Notre Dame's Board of Regents. Since 1990 he had been a governor of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. Grant was founder and chairman of Money Concepts (Canada) Limited, president of Money Concepts Group Capital Corporation, president of National Financial Marketing Services Insurance Agency Inc., and vice-chairman of National Financial Corporation. He was a governor of the Retail Distributor Council since 1991, and a director on the board of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada since 1995. He recently became chairman of the Federation of Independent Mutual Fund Dealers. Prior to Money Concepts (Canada) Limited, Grant was senior vice president of marketing with Imperial Life Assurance Company of Canada and served as chairman of the Life Insurance Marketing Research Association of Hartford, Connecticut, an organization that represents about 600 life insurance companies worldwide. He wrote numerous articles on financial matters and money management and appeared frequently on radio and television programs from coast to coast. He lectured extensively across the country on money matters. He was author of the best-selling book, The Money Jar, co-author with son Rob of The Money Gap, and co-editor of the forthcoming The Money Team. Grant's commitment to life-long education and his extremely positive outlook have led many of his family, friends, franchisees, employees and industry associates to aim higher in their own personal and professional life. Grant functioned in an industry where extensive and detailed contracts were the norm. In his personal life, his word and a handshake were worth much more than any written contract. Visitation times are Saturday, February 27th, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 28th, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at: 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 1st, 1999 at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 21 Simonston Blvd., Thornhill, Ontario. Grant will be buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, 8361 Yonge Street, Thornhill, Ontario.
