H. GUTHRIE Obituary

H. DONALD GUTHRIE QC, LSM Died after a long illness, aged 90. Survived by Ann, his wife of 65 years; his children, Gay, Barbara (Jason Stewart) and Neil; and grandsons, Geoffrey (Emily) and Hugh (Sophia). Donald was a distinguished fourth-generation lawyer and a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, following the long tradition of political involvement established by his great-grandfather Donald Guthrie, his grandfather the Hon. Hugh Guthrie and his father Donald Guthrie. He served on many boards, including the Royal Ontario Museum, the Canada Council and Canadian National Railway Company, and was proud of his long professional association with the University of Toronto. Donald enjoyed time spent at his family's country property, where he was able to indulge his love of birding and interest in nature and conservation. He will be greatly missed. Funeral at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22nd at St. Andrew's Church, King & Simcoe Streets, Toronto, and afterwards at the University Club.

LeRoy and I were sad to hear of Don's passing. We have very fond memories of Don & Ann at CAUS events. He loved people and adventure and both were very kind to us. Pat Lenethen

I have memories of Don rushing in our driveway to be on time to sail with my father on Kempenfelt Bay near Shanty Bay. To me he was a long legged hero! The Guthrie's were wonderful neighbours back in those days and Don and Ann kept a soft spot for Shanty Bay long after. We will miss a gentleman and darn good sailor.

Honourable, honest, and a true professional. I was very lucky to have spent the early part of my career being able to work with and learn from Mr. Guthrie.
Thank you to the Guthrie family for all the years you shared him with those of us at Cassels Brock & Blackwell and peace be with you now.

I worked with Donald when I was Chair of the U of T's Governing Council during the late 1980's and early 1990's. It was people like Donald whose professionalism, character, decency and solid judgement contributed to U of T s then and current status as a world class university. U of T's Bicameral governing structure was challenging, to say the least, but no one was more helpful to me, as Chair, than Donald when guiding the Council through some truly complicated situations. He made a real difference to me, the many Council members, and management and staff over the years and his legacy will be the big part he played towards U of T' s continuing status as a world class institution for teaching and research. I also worked with Donald as the Official Agent for a few Conservative political campaigns and he kept me and many others out of trouble time and again. Donald Guthrie will be missed but truly remembered.
