Hans STRAUSS Obituary

DR. HANS DIETRICH STRAUSS, M.D. February 28, 1944 - January 19, 2022 Beloved husband to his wife Jacquie for almost 35 years. Father to Warner (Michelle), Jennifer (Tom) and John and his five grandchildren, Marc, Gabriella, Lena, Luc and Roan; as well as his siblings, Gerhardt (deceased), Karin and Wallee. In the aftermath of the second world war, at the age of 14, Hans came to Canada with his parents in a quest to join his two sisters, Karin and Wallee. They settled in Thunder Bay, where Hans completed highschool. He moved to Toronto in 1963 to attend the University of Toronto. During this time he met his first wife, Emily, mother of Warner and Jennifer. Hans pursued a very successful career in medicine, with a fellowship at the University of Toronto in cardiology. In 1985, he became a founding father at the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Shortly after, he met his second wife Jacquie and had their son, John. Hans remained indebted to his patients until his detiorating health forced his retirement at the age of 77, shortly before he passed away. Hans was a scholar and a storyteller. He was an excellent speaker, who traveled the world lecturing. His quest for knowledge was shown through his love of reading, as well as his love of science, mathematics and history. His talent for teaching was invaluable and he found great satisfaction in passing on his knowledge. Hans greatly enjoyed cottage life in Muskoka with his family and friends, and lived a very active life biking, hiking and swimming. Hans was a very kind, caring and gentle man, who was a bon vivant and truly enjoyed life. He was very devoted to his family and took care in nuturing long standing friendships. His battle against melanoma showed his ferocoius love of life, his courage in facing life's challenges with stoic dignity, and his acceptance of the inevitable. His optimism and humour will be forever missed. We thank the team at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center. Our very sincere thanks to his long term colleague, Dr. John Jovanovic and all the nurses at the Credit Valley Hospital, and all the staff and colleagues who cared for him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online condolence messages may be made by visiting his memorial page at www.etouch.ca. My relationship with Hans began in 1985 when I had the misfortune (or good fortune) of having a heart attack. I say good because it launched a friendship that traversed a period of over 35 years. It went way beyond a Doctor Patient relationship. I always looked forward to our yearly follow-up appointments. He had a deep love of family and an insatiable appetite for humor. My wife and I had looked forward to one day breaking bread with he and Jacquie.
Hans, thank you for being you.

This beautiful portrait of Hans so perfectly captures his spirit-his curiosity and intelligence, along with his good humour are plainly evident here. To have known him is to know that this photo is perfectly emblematic of who he was as a person and how he embraced life. It was a privilege to know him. Jacquie, to you and your family, our deepest condolences. As others have noted, he was truly larger than life.
