GIRLING, Harry Knowles
On Friday, March 23, 2001, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Zoë, Harry was much loved and will be greatly missed by his children, Oliver, Lucy, Alison and Candida, his brother Frank and sister-in-law Elizabeth, sister Betty and brother-in-law George Lomas, and sister-inlaw Felicia and her husband Sydney Kentridge. He will also be greatly missed by his children-in-law Donna Creed, Paul Schabas, Aaron Davis and Joseph D'Angelo, and by his grandchildren Caroline, Laura, Justin and Beatrice D'Angelo; Jacob, Sara and Julia Schabas; Max and Gabriel Davis. Harry was born in Horsforth, Yorkshire, in 1919, the son of Elizabeth and Francis Girling. He grew up in Newcastle-uponTyne. His studies at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, were interrupted by the war, when he was stationed in England and India. Following his studies he took up a post as an English professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where he met and married Zoë Geffen. In 1962 he moved his family to Toronto to teach at the newly founded York University. Harry shared an originality of insight, a steadiness of friendship and a constancy of love with both his family and many friends in Canada, Britain, South Africa, Israel and the United States. ;He who binds to himself a joy Does the winged life destroy But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in eternity's sun rise. A memorial gathering will be held at the Arts and Letters Club, 14 Elm Street, on Wednesday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the memorial at 75 Garfield Avenue, until 9:00 p.m. and on Thursday after 5:00 p.m. A student award will be established in Harry's name.
