Harry Hill Obituary

(March 27, 1929 – February 15, 2026) Peacefully, in his 97th year, Dad was a man of infinite energy, grace and kindness. The importance of family and connections to the past figured prominently in his daily life. Wise and humble, with a sparkle in his eye, Dad would listen attentively and engage in meaningful conversation with everyone he met. His generosity to family and his beloved Richmond Hill community was constant and reflective of his upbringing. A sense of service and his Anglican faith were values he embraced. Predeceased by his loving wife, Alvy (Smith); and cherished father of Meredith, Megan, Marta, and Paisley. Loving father-in-law to David Robitaille, Don Cranston, Stewart Priddle, and Dan Garvey. Dear brother-in-law to Betty Cook and Eleanor Lloyd. Predeceased by dear sister, Shirley Eakins (Warner); brothers-in-law, Warner Eakins, Sam Cook and Bruce Lloyd. Beloved Gramps/Pop/Grandpa, he will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Cameron (Michaela), Christy (Phillip), Alistair (Lyndsay), Aidan Robitaille (Clare); Sarah (Andrew); Wesley (Christina), Owen Cranston; Madeleine (Adam), Charlotte (Joe), Sophie Priddle; Grace, Malcolm, Will Garvey; and his great-grandchildren, Leo and Miles Robitaille; Quinn and Maeve Cunningham; Charles and Lachlan Robitaille; Chiara and Beatrice Cranston. Beloved uncle to his many special Eakins, Cook, and Lloyd nieces and nephews. Friend and mentor to his devoted caregivers, dad cherished Jenette Lagos and Pia Juanico, and more recently Grace Guillem, Shayne Abrojena, and May Rayos. The devoted son of Gladys Geraldine (Legge) and Percy Clinton Hill, Dad grew up in Richmond Hill with his older sister, Shirley, and dog, Ginger. In an atmosphere infused with family, community service and blossoming entrepreneurship, dad began his lifelong passion for learning. His schooling began at McConaghy Public School and in his later years, Dad relished his connection with the McConaghy Old Boy (MOB) group. Dad's strong ties to the Anglican church guided him to become a server and catechist at St. Mary's Anglican Church. Dad attended Richmond Hill High School and graduated from Ridley College (1947) followed by Trinity College, University of Toronto (1951) with a BA History. Dad then joined his father Percy at his grandfather's wholesale and tobacco business, David Hill & Co. Ltd. In 1940, the business had morphed into Richmond Hill's first Canadian Tire Associate store after an informal handshake with the founding Billes family. Dad's first experiences in the family business were as a young boy stocking shelves and as a teenager traversing the roads delivering merchandise to customers in towns and hamlets throughout York Region and Lake Simcoe. Dad then happily dedicated himself to "The Red Triangle" until his retirement in 2001. Dad loved numbers, Canadian Tire product codes, list-making and solving math equations in his head, and yet he savoured the beauty in every day, and appreciated the wonders in the world: by extensive travel and experiencing other cultures; in artfully presented cuisine, architecture, sunsets at his treasured Royal Muskoka Island cottage and driving "Mrs. Dash;" in reading endless newspapers; in the cut of a fine suit; the craft art of the Islamic knot; in maps, driving and navigation; by playing tennis and bridge at The Badminton and Racquet Club. Dad was resilient and our hero. His natural curiosity kept his mind and heart open. He supported inclusion and was hopeful for peace in the world. His love of family was most beautifully expressed in his guffaw, as he threw his head back in laughter and joy. "In my world, there is a garden where there is no right or wrong, and I will meet you there" - Rumi Visitation Monday, February 23, 2026, between 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill. Funeral Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 10030 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill. Reception to follow at the Thornhill Golf and Country Club, 7994 Yonge Street, Thornhill. Paisley, Dan, Grace, Malcolm, William and the extended Hill family. Our deepest condolences for your loss. Listening to Harry being eulogized yesterday told the story of a remarkable man who led a full and remarkable life; and although the man himself may no longer be with us, the legacy he left behind lives on in all of you. May his memory be a blessing.

Paisley, Dan, Grace, Malcolm, William and the Hill family- articulating the impact of losing a father and a grandfather is the hardest. Grief is a process and my prayer is for your family to find moments of joy amidst the pain and loss. He seemed to be an extraordinary kind of human, one who is remembered by how he made others feel when they were around his presence. What a blessing to have called him Dad or Grandpa. May he rest in peace.
