I met Harry around 1991. He asked me what would a mammal look like with only yeast-like N-glycans? I was immediately fascinated and onboard to find out. Harry was my original mentor in glycobiology. He started me on the road and helped make sense of what I could not understand at the time. Me being an immunologist without any idea of GlcNAc.. So we had wonderful times with many meetings and discussions over the years. I owe him a great debt as his thoughts and intellect totally redirected my career. What a great colleague and person! He could be so humorous at the same time as discussing major biological questions. I miss him greatly.

Our deepest condolences to Judy and the family. I first met Harry at Saul Roseman's lab. Since then I very much respected him as passionate scientist and very kind person. In August 2013 we spent an unforgettable, lively evening with Judy and Harry in Toronto. Placing confidence in us they shared their early memories with us. We are grateful for Harry's and Judy's warmhearted hospitality.

The sad news of Harry´s passing brings back many happy memories of times spent with him at meeting and social event. Harry loved discussing new science with probing question, always encouraging and supportive to his colleagues and students. Harry´s enthusiasm for Glycobiology was infectious and his generosity in sharing information with everyone on his returning from international meetings when I was a post doc in his lab, was simply wonderful. I´ve had the privilege of working with Harry on research projects and organizing a few meetings; and memorable for his presence - at the GlycoT 2016 in Toronto. I am particularly grateful for Harry´s generosity in sharing Charles Warren who did a post doc in our labs. My sincere condolences to Judy and the family.

Harry was a wonderful scientist and colleague in the fields of glycobiology and carbohydrate chemistry. His research was foundational in establishing the field of glycobiology as a distinct discipline that encompasses a wide range of specialties from molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and organic chemistry of carbohydrates. His research and leadership established the University of Toronto as a leading centre in a field, that is now appreciated to be pivotal in the biological sciences and medicine, due in no small part to his groundbreaking contributions. He was regarded with great affection and was always welcoming and encouraging to those of us who were new to the field and to Canada. My sincere condolences to Judy and his family.

Dear family of Harry,
my heartfelt condolences. Harry's papers inspired my earliest scientific work on glycosyltransferase enzymes; he was a true pioneer in that field of research and the clarity and honesty of that work transpired in his writings. It was a pleasure and honour to meet him at several occasions as a young scientist and he immediately made people feel at ease with his sense of humor. I have very fond memories of these encounters.
Wishing you strength and courage and friendship amongst eachother in dealing with this loss of a great man.
Yours truly

Deep condolences to Judy and the extended Schachter family. It was a long time ago (1973) that Lou Siminovitch connected Harry and me in a quest to determine the defect in my CHO mutant that I later called Lec1. GlcNAc-Harry taught me all about GlcNAc-transferases and we showed that Lec1 had no GlcNAcT-I activity! It was all downhill from there! Harry´s booming voice and joyous laughter was a fixture at scientific meetings on biochemistry and glycobiology. He contributed greatly to science in several fields and to pushing glycobiology to prominence in the biological sciences. It was all great fun! RIP Harry - you are sorely missed by your scientific colleagues.

Harry has been an icon in his field of glycobiology. The whole world respected and loved him for what he was: a superb scientist and wonderful friend. As his graduate student, I have learned an incredible amount of science and humanity from him. He will never be forgotten.

I offer my deepest condolences for the loss of such a remarkable gentleman in your life. Harry's legacy will endure in our hearts forever. It was a profound honor to have been a member of Dr. Harry Schacter´s research team. As the epitome and encyclopedia of glycobiology knowledge, Harry guided us through the vast field of glycobiology research, which I often fondly refer to as the 'sugar field.' Our research journey together brimmed with cherished sweet memories that will forever be treasured. Your exemplary leadership and mentorship have served as a beacon for all your students and colleagues. I will always be inspired by your passion and dedication to biomedical research, your exceptional intellect, your boundless enthusiasm, your relentless work ethic, and your unwavering integrity as both a scholar and a person. May Harry rest in eternal peace; he will be loved forever.

Dr. Harry and I were graduates in medicine, 1959, at U. of T. Harry was a happy, sociable, brilliant student. It happened that we both bunked in as sleep-starved Junior Interns in 1960 at Toronto General Hospital. I am saddened to hear of Harry's passing and I pass on my concern and sympathy for his grieving family.
