Harvey SCHWARTZ Obituary
Dr. HARVEY SCHWARTZ June 16, 1936 - April 10, 2023 Dr. Harvey Schwartz passed away in North York General Hospital in the early hours of April 10, 2023, of complications related to dementia. Born and raised in Toronto, he was the second son of Samuel and Gertrude Schwartz, and younger brother of the late Dr. Bernard Schwartz. He was married twice and divorced twice: first to Laurel Amalia, and second to Frances Winer. He leaves behind two children, Andrew and Tobey Schwartz; and his girlfriend, Olga Popovska, who helped care for him in his decline. A PhD in Economics, he worked as a professor at York University for the majority of his career, with some forays into work for the federal government. His particular focus was on the economics of cities. He was a dedicated academic who continued to publish and present papers at conferences around the world even after he retired from teaching. During his years teaching, he spent a few years running a small business called Metrotainment Video, which was fitting because he was passionate about film. He also loved to travel, and used this opportunity to present at conferences to see more of the world. He was a passionate supporter of Israel and while he was able, he visited Israel every year, even volunteering his time to help out with charitable causes. The funeral was held at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the Beth David Synagogue section of Pardes Chaim Cemetery.
