Heidi OVERHILL Obituary

HEIDI ELLIS OVERHILL Heidi Ellis Overhill died early morning on February 4, 2024, at the age of 68. An incredible creative thinker, Heidi served as a senior designer at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, was a beloved professor at OCAD and Sheridan Colleges, and a designer on projects as diverse as the Loring and Wyle and Henry Moore exhibits at the AGO, the Mesopotamia and Ancient Iran exhibition at the ROM, the former Shania Twain Museum in Timmins, Ontario, as well as The National Museum of the Philippines in Manilla and many others. Heidi was born in Montreal, but spent her childhood in Winnipeg and then in Ottawa, where she first learned technical drawing at her father's engineering firm, working on the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. She had a huge and adventuresome spirit, hitchhiking as a 19-year-old through the United States and riding in box cars, later attending the Royal College of Art in London, working in Milan, and travelling widely, including through India and Nepal with her husband and best friend, Alan. She was a painter and a published author, and managed, with an enormous determination through her sickness, to finish a draft of her PhD in the Faculty of Information at U of T, Conceptualizing the Western Domestic Kitchen as a Site for 'Information." She was devoted to learning, and she never stopped. Heidi could not only create designs, but build them or sew them, too. She loved being in nature and had a magical flower garden she tended to. She loved good food and bad wine, and possessed an amazing dark humour. She owned every Captain Beefheart album on vinyl, and she could stay up late talking animatedly about anything, with anyone. Daughter of the late Doug and Daphne Overhill, she leaves behind her husband of 37 years, Alan Rosenthal; daughter, Nora Rosenthal; stepson, Paul Pintner; sisters-in-law, Arlene Markle and Donna Rosenthal, their husbands, Jack Markle and Sean O'Sullivan; alongside so many family, friends and colleagues who loved and treasured her. Many thanks to all our caregivers who allowed Alan and Nora to keep Heidi with them at home until the end, surrounded by her cats, her books, her paintings, generations worth of objects whose histories only she knew, and by so much love. May her memory be a blessing. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Princess Margaret Hospital, or if you have a child in your life, buy them a book you love and read it to them.

Heidi was my favourite teacher at OCA (before the D and the U). She was inspiring, and quirky, and funny. She told so many great stories and she starred in many, too. I´m so sorry for your loss.

Hi Alan and Nora - Big hugs to you both. So sorry to hear about Heidi. Gosh she nourished such a big part of my developing mid-twenty Self. I think of her often and all the gems she passed on to me -so many wise words and good ideas. She was generous and kind and so-so funny. I have never met anyone like her. She truly was the good Fairy and that fairy dust is still so nourishing all these years on. I hope all that goodness she spread out in the world is a bit of a comfort for you both in this sad time. Sending love and light to you both.

So many memories of Heidi...a love of material things, design, eccentricities, a good story, and food-not to mention Shadow White Socks. So sorry for your loss Alan and Nora. The thing I remember most is her impish grin-Classic Heidi! Love to you both in this time of grief.

Over the years, I worked with Heidi Overhill as a freelance exhibition designer and when she taught at OCAD in both Liberal Studies and the Design faculties. She was energetic, enthusiastic and a creative designer. Her exuberant laugh, her sense of humour and her inability to suffer fools gladly, made her a great colleague.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss Heidi.
Words cannot even begin to express my sorrow. She was very kind, gentle, humorous and considerate.I could not express my feelings in English while I was in Toronto, she supported me a lot.
I will say though, she will always be in my heart. It is not easy but I want to visit her grave just once to properly say my appreciate in the near future.

Alan I am so sorry to hear you have lost Heidi. No one more than Heidi could make an expression of condolences, where one ought to respect convention and pull one´s punches, difficult, because she never did! What a crazy wonderful breath of fresh air Heidi was when she first blew into our staid little enclave (industrial design) at Carleton. How could you not love her. There is no consolation but that you and Heidi managed to find each other. The sad fact of the matter is the larger than life the person, the harder it is to imagine them gone, and Heidi´s star burned very, very bright. My deepest condolences to you and Nora and to Kirstie and your families.
