HELEN CHISHOLM Obituary
(January 22, 1928 – November 20, 2025) Passed peacefully at The Dunfield Retirement Residence, Toronto, in her 98th year. Helen is a daughter of Blanche and Gilbert LaBine, who was known as Canada's Mr. Uranium. Helen was predeceased by her dear husband, George Warren Chisholm, after a wonderful 34-year marriage. Helen is also predeceased by all of her siblings: Leonard LaBine, Lillian Maloney, Joseph LaBine, Frances French, Margaret Beaudry and Patricia Egan. Helen and George shared what we now call a blended family. Helen is the mother of John Burns (Sandra), Kelly Knox (Ron), and Mark Burns (Laurel); and stepmother of the late Rebecca Clarkes, George Jr. (Sonia), Jeffery (Tamara), Ian (Jane), Meg (Florencio); and her close friend, Elaine Stewart, who has always been an invaluable member of the family. Their daughters and sons have 15 grandchildren,12 great-grandchildren and numerous grandcats and dogs, all of whom received Helen's love, attention and advice, whether or not requested. Family was Helen's raison d'?tre. It is appropriate to use the French expression as Helen was born in Haileybury, Ontario, the daughter of a legendary prospector and spoke only French in her early years. The family later moved to Toronto, where Helen and her sisters attended Loretto Abbey. Helen loved her life with George at their home in Toronto, the cottages on Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay, the winter home in Atlantis, Florida, and their many trips and parties with family and friends. Helen and George were truly blessed. Shortly after George's passing in 2015, Helen took up residence at The Dunfield Retirement Residence. Helen started to experience some cognitive issues which became more pronounced over the years. If you asked her where she lived, she would tell you she lived in Florida. Her only complaint was that the elevators were broken. She never did find the hidden buttons to override the safety precautions to restrict exit seeking by the 4th floor residents. She explained the snow away by saying "it sometimes snows in Florida." Although in the past few years her memory was such that she would not remember visits from family and friends, it was apparent that she relished their time spent with her and enjoyed the company when they were with her. Helen's family would like to thank the management and staff at The Dunfield, in particular, the 4th floor team of nurses, PSW's, VHA's, food and beverage staff and the many private caregivers who provided Helen with outstanding care. Losing a loved one is always sad. Watching someone who is vibrant, energetic and inquisitive slowly deteriorate is heartbreaking. That she did not experience pain is some solace. That Helen, an elegant and traditional Lady, is now where she always prayed she would be - in Heaven enjoying the company of those she loves as her reward. Helen will always be with us, fondly remembered with much warmth and affection - and lots of love. A private Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Blessed Sacrament Parish Church, followed by interment in the LaBine Family plot, Mount Hope Cemetery. We would like to thank Blessed Sacrament Parish Church, Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery and Morley Bedford Funeral Services Ltd. for their advice and assistance.
