HELEN ARLENE HOWARD (nee Creighton) September 7, 1927 - September 6, 2022 It is with sad hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen in Kingston General Hospital on September 6, after a brief illness. The daughter of Cyrus and Ila Creighton, Helen grew up in Napanee. Predeceased by her husband Marshall and brothers Gerald and Clifford. She is survived by her brother Don (Moira) of Wellington and sister in law Donna of Napanee and their families. She is also survived by her two stepdaughters Mary Ellen Ferguson (David) of Saint John and Allison Gallagher of Fredericton, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Academic excellence was a high priority for Helen. She graduated from Queen's (B.A.), McGill (M.L.S.) and Rutgers (Ph.D.). Helen enjoyed a long career in various aspects of librarianship and information studies. In Montreal she established libraries for the Newsprint Association of Canada and Montreal Engineering Company before becoming University Librarian at Sir George William University (Concordia). After completing her Ph.D. she taught at the University of Toronto and McGill University and then became Director of the McGill Graduate School Library and Information Studies. In retirement Helen and Marshall moved to Kingston where they were able to continue to explore the waterways aboard their trawler "Confidence". Helen's enthusiasm for life was especially noticeable in her support of the arts and culture and her love of travel. She was always ready for a hand of bridge! A memorial service, to give thanks for Helen's life, followed by a reception, will be held at 11 a.m. on September 17, at Robert J. Reid and Sons Funeral Home "The Chapel on the Corner", 309 Johnson St. Kingston.
