Alice, I am trying to find you and believe you must be the beloved daughter of Helmut. If this is you, please write. I believe we taught together at QRS in Bo in 1969-70. I am hoping to hear from you.

My late but heartfelt condolences for the loss of your father, Alice. It's over 40 years later, and I can still visualize his colourful, ongoing renovations at home in Morin Heights.

Dear Marguerite,

My most heartfelt condolences to you and your daughter. Your husband will always have a very special place in my heart. He believed in me and encouraged my feeble attempts during those high school years in commercial art classes at CPHS. I often think of him and remember his smiles. They lit up my heart. He will be dearly missed. I was trying to locate him today and came across this Legacy. He was a very special man and lit up the world when he smiled. May all your wonderful memories of him help to ease the pain of his passing. You are both in my prayers.

Dear Marguerite

My husband Bill and I have been in the process of organizing a new house including three of Helmut's paintings which we acquired in the early 70,s while I was learning painting from Helmut. For some inexplicable reason we checked his name on -line and discovered he had just passed on. You have our deepest sympathy as Helmut was a special influence on my life at a time when we were raising children, Bill was at school and I had wanted to paint as a hobby.. His art classes and wonderful spirit provided many hours of happiness for me.

We had one memorable time with Helmut in Toronto shortly we had moved from St Sauveur when he came for the evening , stayed the night while he was on a gallery trip. We had a lively evening and we hoped we hadn't led him too astray due to his health issues. However, he went away happy the next morning.

These wonderful memories and the paintings in our new home will be a constant reminder of Helmut and the pleasure that we had in his company. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Alice.

Sincerely

Barry

Marguerite. I think of Helmut often when I'm at the cottage. He left us a couple of paintings of the islands on his last visit which hang happily on the cottage walls and here in our Fredericton house we have a lovely painting called old friends which once hung in Ralph's apartment. We had some good times when you came to visit and many happy stories to tell when Ralph lived in town.

Marguerite,
I am so very sorry. We (the whole of my family) regret so much that we didn't have a chance to see both of you again. Through my tears I hope he's with Ralph now. Could you send me your current address?

Dear Alice,
My brother, Gary Olauson, phoned me last night to let me know he had seen a news clipping of your father's passing. We had a great chat reminiscing about our time in Morin Heights in the early 60's when we were kids and the friendship we shared with you and Ralph. Your family was so kind to our family as new residents in town and I especially remember how kind your father Helmut was to us. We were only there a short time as our father was transferred to the US. Your father's paintings hung in my parents living room for the remainder of their lives and now grace the home of my brother in Canmore. What a wonderful legacy he left us. I will never forget the fun we had skiing, riding our bikes and exploring the hills and rocks of Morin Heights with you. May you be comforted in knowing that your father touched so many lives with his kindness and his talent.

Dear Marguerite and Alice,
Helmut was always one of our favourite close friends of Mom and Dad. A man of character.
He was truly someone who had a great impression on us kids. And Alice and Ralph were always very special to us as well growing up. Time marches on but we all have very strong memories of Helmut and your whole family. May he rest in peace.

Dear Alice,
Last week for some unknown reason my thoughts drifted to Canada and Morin Heights. I Googled MH and Gransow and found that your father Helmut had recently departed this world. A very strange coincidence!
This sadness brought back a flood of wonderful memories of my adventure in MH fifty years ago when I met you, Ralph and Helmut. I found him to very patient and tolerant towards a strange teenager for the other side of the world. He was very hospitable allowing me to stay in your house on many occasions. My memories are still vivid of the studio, his paintings, the hunting trips and much more.
It appears that he was very well liked and a highly respected Canadian artist. I still have hanging in the house two of his work that he gave us before we left Canada.
I hope after such a long interval between contact with me you can accept my heart felt condolences. I know when a loved one leaves us grief can cloud the issue, but in this case I feel we should be celibrating the life of a man who has left his mark on this world and left it a better place that he found it.
Also please accept my late condolences in the passing of Ralph.

Dear Marguerite and Alice: My sincere sympathy to you both. My first meeting with the Gransow family was the day Helmut, Pia ,Alice and Ralph came to live in the log house in Morin Heights The house built by my late cousin, Baird Davis. Ralph, { deceased } Helmut and the late Pia's son had a fall and was brought to my late Mother, Edith Davis. " Mother " , the nurse of the village. This meeting resulted in a friendship with Helmut lasting a lifetime. Mother received Christmas Greetings from Helmut every Christmas from many places on the globe. My friendship with Marguerite and Helmut was renewed when twenty years ago I received a call from Helmut asking, " Do you make cinnamon buns as good as your late Mothers's. ? My response was, " come tomorrow to visit ". This call resulted in many visits to our home during the time Marguerite and Helmut spent in Victoria, Helmut loved to reminisce about his early years in Morin and talk of the " Old Timers ".
Helmuts paintings of the Laurentians take many of us back in memory to those , " Happy Times " in our lives. Sincerely Margaret Davis Messerschmidt Deep Cove. North Saanich ' Vancouver Island : B. C.

Marguerite and Alice: I have always had such fond memories of all of you from our days together in Nigeria. I often think of the 2 beautiful Gransows lost in the war but thankfully I still have one to enjoy and to remember him by. That is immortality! My sympathies to you both.

My sympathy, Marguerite and Alice. Helmut was a dear friend and neighbour to my mother (Villa Minshall) and aunt (Isobel Speake) in Morin Heights after my father died in 1954. I recently came across an Oct 1954 Reader's Digest cover of Helmut, with Alice and Ralph, raking leaves at the log cabin. Another cover in1956 is of Helmut and my brother, Bill, hunting. Around the same time Helmut took me on holiday with him to Cape Cod to join the family. Fond memories. I will miss him and treasure his paintings of the Laurentian landscape.
