Henry BERRY Obituary

DR. HENRY BERRY May 31, 1930 - December 8, 2020 We are extraordinarily grateful for the exceptional life of Dr. Henry Berry, which ended peacefully at his home in Toronto on December 8, 2020, in his 91th year, following a brief illness. Born in Windsor, Ontario, he graduated from the University of Toronto with his Medical Doctorate in 1954, became a Neurology Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and was elected to the Royal College of Physicians in London, UK. He rose to be the Neurologist-in-Chief and the Director of the Department of Neurophysiology at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. Later in his career he transitioned to private practice medical legal work, and lectured and published extensively on medical legal topics. He enjoyed his work very much, and wrote his final medical report just two weeks before his death. Henry had a tremendous intellect. He had a love for reading, particularly philosophy, literature, history, and 'the world of ideas' as he called it. He was a skilled craftsman and loved metalwork and woodwork, skills he used to make machine parts for his antique car collection. To all who knew him he was generous beyond bounds, and had a sense of humour and an optimism that brought joy to each interaction. He leaves behind two daughters: Estelle Berry of Toronto and Natalia Berry (Eric Twerdahl) of Washington, DC, and three grandchildren (Kira, Henry and Edward). He was celebrated with a private service at The Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto on Saturday, December 12, 2020. If desired, donations may be made to St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto or the Toronto Humane Society. Online condolences may be made through http:// www.cardinalfuneralhomes.c om.

Henry and I were classmates in high school in the 1940s. His brilliance as a student was outstanding - in those days matriculation examination results were posted in the newspapers after being marked by a board in Toronto. Everyone saw who were the high achievers. Henry topped them all.

Henry proceeded to University and absorbed all he was taught. I Joined the Airforce, travelling to Europe in the 1950s and throughout Canada and the USA in my duties as a Pilot in the RCAF. Henry and I lost touch in 1959.

God bless his daughters and grandchildren. Please accept my condolences.

I knew Henry from the Art & Letters Club. I had been hoping to resume our conversations there. Always gracious and stimulating he will be widely and greatly missed.
