BEST, Henry Bruce Macleod
Born Toronto, 9 October 1934, died Sudbury, Good Friday 9 April 2004. Historian, university professor and administrator, educated at Upper Canada College, University of Toronto (B.A. 1956), Université Laval, Québec (M.ès Arts 1957, Ph.D. 1969). 1958-1960, Executive Assistant to Secretary of State for External Affairs, the Hon. Sidney Smith and other ministers.
1964-1969, YORK UNIVERSITY, Toronto. Lecturer in Canadian History, Research Associate to President Murray Ross, and author of report on 'The Establishment of Professional Faculties and Schools at York University'.
1969-1977, Atkinson College of York University, Associate Dean, Associate Professor of History and Co-ordinator of new interdisciplinary programme of Canadian Studies.
1972-1974, Member and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Ontario College of Art.
1977-1984, President of LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY, Sudbury. Professor of History, taught courses in both French and English on history of Québec, Atlantic Provinces and Canadian Art.
1978, initiated the Falconbridge Public Lecture Series at Laurentian University.
1984, awarded Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy in recognition of services to the Italian Canadian community.
1984-2004, Membre du Conseil du Centre Franco-Ontarien de Folklore et de la Fondation Germain Lemieux.
1989-1999, Membre du Conseil du Théatre du Nouvel Ontario.
1987-2002, Chair and member of the Sudbury Farmers' Market.
Younger son of the late Dr. Charles Herbert Best and Margaret Hooper Mahon Best, brother of the late Charles Alexander (Sandy) Best, nephew of the late Henry Macleod Mahon and Linda Mahon. Beloved husband of Janna Mairi de Grasse Ramsay Best, dear father of Bruce Macleod Ramsay Best and Mairi Mahon Ramsay Best and her husband, Gustavo Ybazeta Aguilar. Proud grandfather of Izabo Ramsay Ybazeta- Best. Dear brother-in-law of Eila Ramsay Clapham, Balquhidder, Scotland, Eileen Jane Thompson Best, Toronto, and Laurie MacTavish Best, Carmel, California. Uncle of Charles Stewart Best, Alexander MacDonald Best, Margaret Cairine Best, Melinda Jane Best, and Susan MacTavish Best. Great-uncle to Meredith and Hilary Best. Cher 'frère adoptif' du Jean- Francois Lacerte, fils du feu Docteur Jean Lacerte et Madame Agathe Lacourcière Lacerte, Québec. Author of biography (2003) of his parents, Margaret and Charley: the Personal Story of Dr Charles Best, the Co-Discoverer of Insulin. Friends and family are invited to gather at 11.30 am on Wednesday, 14 April 2004 for the Funeral Service at 12 noon, followed by a reception, at Fraser Auditorium, Laurentian University, Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury, Ontario. A memorial service will also be held in Toronto at 10 am on Thursday, 29 April 2004 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 75 Simcoe Street, Toronto. Donations may be made to the DR. HENRY B.M.
