Hubert STITT Obituary

HUBERT STITT (Bert) Peacefully at home, age 87, surrounded by his loving family. Cherished husband of Barbara, his wife of 64 years and the love of his life. Adoring father of Allan and Sari, Beverley and Michael, Michael and Carla, and Nancy and Rob. Doting grandfather of Jason, Melanie and Lindsay Stitt, Samantha, Jake and Amanda Wolfe, Eli and Nate Stitt, Max, Cassie and Bennett Levy. Brother of the late Nathan Stitt, brother-in-law of Doreen and the late Joe Kronick, Bonnie Pape and Murray Soupcoff, and Michael and the late Judy Firestone. Son of the late Myers and Belle Stitt. Lovingly cared for by Dorie Tesoro. Bert lived life to the fullest. A respected lawyer, he had many interests including art collecting, travel, performing magic tricks for his grandchildren, enjoying time at his cottage and spending quality time with family and friends. He grew up in Fort William and Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) and spent his summers at his cottage on Loon Lake. He went to the University of Toronto and University of Colorado for his business degree, and then U of T Law School where he excelled academically and played on a variety of University sports teams. Bert opened the law firm Stitt, Baker and McKenzie in Toronto, and travelled extensively around the world combining work and pleasure. He loved taking his grandchildren mini- golfing, horseback riding, and out for ice cream. He derived great pleasure watching his children and grandchildren play sports. The more he had his family around him (including dogs), the happier he was. He loved big Friday night dinners, especially those celebrating family achievements and milestones. He had a witty sense of humour, and was a man of unparalleled integrity, honesty and generosity. He will be greatly missed. A Family graveside service will be held on Monday, December 14, 2020. Bert and I were classmates at U of T Law, articled together at Minden Pivnick and Gross, and shared some time Practicing out of the same office. He also participated at my wedding as an usher. Bert had a brilliant legal mind, and in those days , a great interest in automobiles. Bert, Barbara, and I had a very good social relationship as well.
I know that the last few years have been difficult, but the close family bond surely helped, please accept my condolences: L. Murray Eades

I have wonderful memories growing up with the High Street gang. Lots of parties at Bert's home, dancing with my boy friend, later my husband, Paul Baxter, in their basement. A wonderful time to grow up!

My late father Jack Pickett used to speak about Bert Stitt in our home often. He referred to him as a very kind man. My condolences on behalf of the Pickett family.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Bert's passing. His kindness, charm and exuberance for life made a big impact on me as a young lawyer. He was always smiling when he was talking about his kids and was always curious about other people, their work and their lives. He will be missed and remembered.
