Hudson SULLIVAN Obituary

July 12, 1986 – August 4, 2024 It is with overwhelming grief that our family announces the sudden loss of our beloved Hudson, who died on August 4, 2024, at the young age of 38. The grief, though all-consuming, is tempered by reflection on what a beautiful person Hudson was: how, despite the shortness of his life, he was so widely loved and admired – as a son, a brother, a husband, a father, and a friend to so many people. It was said of him that he was "the definition of pure joy and goodness" and he wore this renown with humility. Hudson was born in Toronto, educated at Upper Canada College, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame. He was an exceptional athlete with a particular passion for hockey and skiing. He was a team player, captain, coach, and he had a competitive spirit that both inspired teammates and brought people together. It was through sports that he forged many of his lifelong friendships. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2008, he moved to New York where he embarked on a successful career in marketing and brand strategy. His creative brilliance left its mark on brands such as Pepsico, Nike, Procter & Gamble, and Adsum, to name a few. While he will be remembered by colleagues for his exceptional creativity and talent, it was his uncanny ability to inspire and bring out the best in those around him that will be his biggest legacy. As one colleague reflected: "He was the first person to give praise to others and often deflected any praise he got to those on the team helping him." It was in New York that he met his beloved wife Katie Sullivan (née Nixon). After spending a decade in New York building a life together, they moved back to Toronto in 2020 to raise their two sons. While Hudson excelled in all aspects of his life, it was in fatherhood in which he soared. Hudson's greatest joy was raising his two sons with Katie. Endlessly compassionate and kind, he also became a father figure to his sister and many others. He was everyone's favourite dad, known to many as "Uncle Huddy". He leaves his best friend and wife, Katie, their young sons, Casey (2) and Wyatt (4), his sister, Hilary, his parents, Brian and Carol, and in-laws, Jane and John and Chris Nixon, as well as cherished cousins, nephews, aunts, uncles, and an endless circle of friends. Hudson's Celebration of Life will be held in Laidlaw Hall at Upper Canada College (200 Lonsdale Rd., Toronto) at 4 p.m. on Thursday August 15th. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

When I first moved to New York, Hudson was one of the first people I met. Right from the start, his kindness, warmth, and welcoming nature made me feel right at home. I had the good fortune to skate with Huddy for 6 hockey seasons and he was more than just a teammate; he was the heart of our team, always enthusiastic, always positive, and a natural leader. He was also wonderful with my young children. I´ll never forget the time he scored a crucial goal in a big game for us-all for the promise of a Timbit from my kids. I was proud to call him a friend, and his spirit will continue to inspire us all. My thoughts are with his family, his wife, kids and his vast network of friends. Rest easy Huddy, you´ll be deeply missed.

There are no words to describe how deeply sorry I am to hear this news. I met Hudson through Bergman, DY, and bunch of the UCC guys and we got on famously. An incredible human and father. Struggling to find the words. Overcome with profound grief for his family. May his memory be a blessing.

As a UCC student in the class of 2028 that was part of the WAC team, we are so greatful for Hudson´s joyful contributions. Students from across Toronto were witness to Hudson´s enthusiasm, passion and kindness as he graced the Laidlaw hall stage draped in his UCC hockey jersey this past March, giving out shirts, hats and heartfelt advice. We pass on our deepest condolences and thanks.

Hudson was a friend and classmate from our time at UCC. In our graduating year, he was elected as the head of our house, McHugh´s. I also ran for the position and I think Hudson knew that I wanted it. That year he went out of his way to involve me in running house affairs, often asking me to run house meetings in his stead and singling me out for recognition during our final house assembly. It was a meaningful gesture then and has stuck with me since. It´s not surprising at all to see that same generosity of spirit has resonated with so many others. My deepest condolences to the Sullivan family. May his memory be a blessing.

I'd like to send my deepest condolences to the Sullivan family.
I was very saddened to hear this tragic news. It did not sit well with me. I didn't know Hudson for a very long time but in the short time that I did, he made an impact. I met Hudson when I joined the York Mills hockey club between the year 1999-2002. Hudson was already an established player on the Select (competitive) team with leadership qualities speaking for themselves. After getting a chance on the taxi squad, i had made the select team in 2000. This is where i really got to know Hudson through our practices and games each week. He definitely was a sports guy and didn't like to lose. He knew many players on the team from his school UCC - A. Tapscott, D. Phelan to name a few. I didn't know anyone and Hudson made the effort to get to know me and help include me whenever on team tournaments or team get togethers. He definitely supported me and helped push me to be better. We had a good friendship and it was simply born through hockey. I remember being invited over to his house in Rosedale and spent the day together playing tennis and just hanging out. We really just enjoyed each others company. He was someone who had great morals and values. Lead by example. I can see why he was such a good family man and is known as "Uncle Huddy". It was really too bad we lost touch when the team broke up in the 2003 season. Looking back I wish I tried harder keeping that connection. I really appreciated knowing you Hudson. RIP my friend.

Hudson was one of the most genuine students that I taught at UCC. He was kind to others, always willing to do what was right and always went out of his way to include everyone. I was particularly pleased when we met up in NYC for the annual Harlem shinny hockey tournament. Always outgoing and positive, I am so saddened by his passing. My sincere condolences to his family. Gone far too soon.

I had the pleasure of teaching music and choir to Hudson at UCC Prep. He was an enthusiastic, interested and kind student. He was always keen to help and learn on the choir/band trip to the UK in 1988. I have attached 2 pictures of him at Hadrian´s Wall and the England/Scotland border. My sincere condolences to the family. Kathryn Edmondson

Hudson Sullivan was one of the finest young men we have ever met. And to say that he will be sorely missed would be a huge understatement. We feel so blessed that he came into our lives.

We first met Hudson in 2004 when he and our son were freshman at Notre Dame. From day one, we knew he was special. That unique smile and unforgettable enthusiasm made an immediate impression on us. He always made the day better every time we saw him. And his people skills were what truly set him apart. He treated everyone with kindness and respect, and was always there for those needing help.

But it was as a husband, father, son and friend where Hudson had his greatest impact. His commitment and loyalty to those that he loved was unmatched. For someone with so many gifts, this will be his greatest legacy.

We send our heartfelt sympathy and prayers out to his beloved wife, Katie; his two young sons, Casey and Wyatt; his parents and sister, Brian, Carol and Hilary; and all those who loved Hudson as we did.

With deep gratitude for the life of Hudson Sullivan,

Rob and Carol Kurz

Hudson was a gem. The type of person you go to ND to hopefully meet. Dropped in on him, Katie, Wyatt, and Casey on a random Monday last December, and they could not have been more fun or more gracious hosts. It was beautiful to watch how he parented his young boys: with patience, humor, and kindness. Was looking forward to many more. RIP Hudson, legend.

If there were more Hudsons in the world, it would genuinely be a much kinder, optimistic and positively motivated place. His passing is made so much more poignant because he really was an inspiring example of the character attributes that truly matter and make a difference. Figuring out how we can all enhance some of his personality traits in ourselves can perhaps go a small way to help mitigate the tragedy of his brutally early departure of the world.
