Hugh BLAKENEY Obituary

Hugh Blakeney was unique in every way. A kind, loving, and principled person, he put his family above all else. He passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 20th, in Ottawa. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan (a loyal Roughriders fan his whole life), Hugh spent the last 42 years in Ottawa where he worked as a lawyer in private practice and for the New Democratic Party for Ed Broadbent, Alexa McDonough, and Howard Hampton. Hugh had a passion for history, politics, and mathematics, and taught his children to see both sides of every argument. This passion for knowledge led him to a love of travel, which he shared with his wife, Mary, and their family. Together, they created lasting memories of trips taken across the globe. It also meant he would stride through the Glebe, cloth tote bag in hand, to the public library to nurture his fascination for the world around him. Equally adventurous in his cooking, he was often found in the kitchen making those he loved happy by preparing great meals. He loved the small joys in life, such as paddling a canoe and holding a newborn baby in his arms. For Hugh, few things were better than a game of bridge, a long train trip, a shady spot, and a good pair of wool socks. Hugh will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Ormerod; and children, Victoria (Jonathan), Stephen (Robyn), Isobel (Katie), and Christopher. A committed and loving father, he was exceptionally proud of his children and delighted in his granddaughters Elouise and Merrill. He will be remembered fondly by his mother, Anne, and siblings, Barbara, David, and Margaret (Stan). Hugh will be missed for his quirky humour, his brilliant mind, and his kindness. His wife and children are heartbroken by this loss as are his family, friends, and the Adelaide Street community. A celebration of life will be held in his honour in June. My heart skipped many beats when I saw this obituary. I can't accurately express my shock and sadness. We were all the better for his presence on this earth. I had contact with Hugh and his family through his sister. I especially send my condolences and a hug to Barbara.

I was shocked and saddened to just learn of Hugh's passing in the G&M. My sincere condolences to his family.

We were part of a group of high school - university friends in Saskatchewan so many years ago, and had some great adventures by canoe in the north. Hugh's friendly disposition, great smile, quick wit, and twinkle in his eye made him a great companion.

Life then took all of us in many different directions, as it does, and we lost contact. What a wonderful and rewarding life he lived, and fine legacy of family, friends, and memories that he has left.

My deepest sympathies to Hugh´s family on his passing. I met Hugh as part of an inter-collegiate outdoor group that introduced us to canoeing exploring the natural beauties of northern Saskatchewan. Hugh was a most thoughtful, considerate and delightful friend on these treks.

I was saddened to learn of Hugh's passing. We were neighbours for a few decades, enjoyed the street parties and sidewalk conversations about some issue or another - usually the 'hood' causes. We shared political banter on the Hill and pre-debate rallies for our Leaders...always a smile, good humour, thoughtful comment and a sharing of Saskatchewan roots. My sincere condolences to Mary and the family. My thoughts are with you. Hugh will be missed.

My deepest condolences to Mary and to all of Hugh's family. I remember so clearly how excited Alexa McDonough was when Hugh decided to join her staff in the run-up to the crucial 1997 federal election. Hugh was a calm, loyal and insightful colleague. He always wanted to see the right thing done. The obituary and comments from his friends tell his unique story so well.

Sincere condolences to Hugh´s family.

Hugh and I met in first year at law school and shortly thereafter became fast friends. I came from Winnipeg and both proudly being from the prairies helped establish that initial bond.
We have always remained good friends.
He was a wonderful human being.

Rest easy Hugh

I am saddened to read in the Globe and Mail of Hugh's passing. I knew him long ago when we were students at Scott Collegiate Institute in Regina. None of the comments in the eulogy surprise me. Hugh always cared about people and nature and was fun to be around. He was always brilliant; and unassuming. My deepest condolences to Hugh's family and close friends. Ed Lehman, Regina
