Hugh BUTTERS Obituary

HUGH WILLIAM BUTTERS 1938 - 2021 Predeceased by his parents, Nellie and Captain Frank Butters Master Mariner and beloved wife, Carolea. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, it is with profound sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Hugh on March 8, 2021. Born in Collingwood, October 24, 1938, Hugh lived a full and exciting life. In Collingwood, he left his mark on the football field and hockey rink, was invited to attend the Detroit Red Wings Junior tryout camp in 1955 and achieved great personal success on the track. Hugh was Valedictorian of his graduating class and actively involved in the Church Choir. Hugh's teaching career began in the Village of Kirkville and for two years he taught all grades in one room. From there he went to Wilmington Public School in North York, where he met his future wife, Carolea, and then spent over 20 years at St. Andrew's Junior High where Hugh made an indelible impression and formed some of his strongest friendships. Hugh enjoyed many summers in Algonquin Park. From 1975 to 1984 he and Carolea owned and directed Camp Tanamakoon. He was highly respected and deeply loved for his passionate leadership. He will be remembered for his genuine love of the staff and his delightful sense of humour. His love for Tanamakoon continues through treasured friend Patti Thom and his granddaughters. Hugh was a loving and devoted husband to Carolea for 53 years. From their first trip to New York in 1967 to the beautiful city of Dubai, over the years they travelled the world together enjoying adventures of a lifetime. Loved unconditionally, Jennifer (Dan) and Christopher could not have asked for a more supportive and caring father. He was "Papa" to his grandchildren, Nicole and Brooke on whom the sun rose and set; the three of them sharing treasured moments of mischief and delight. Hugh leaves behind his twin brother Frank (Bari-Lynne) and David (Heather), nieces and nephews, and a circle of beloved friends who enriched his life in countless ways. The family wishes to thank Drs. Leung and Robson and their teams at North York General Hospital and the entire staff at Amica Bayview Gardens for their compassion and care. A celebration honouring Hugh's life will be held on the other side of the pandemic. For those wishing to receive further information, please email [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, contributions to www.kidsincamp.com or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Hugh, I did not get to meet you personally but did get to know you through the stories your son Christopher shared with me. I would have loved to have met you in person. I think we would have had many good laughs together. A dance or two would have been fantastic too. :) one day I may just get that dance with you. Until then, Keep smiling down upon your family.

My condolences to the Butters family. I knew Hugh as a colleague at St. Andrew's J.H.S. He was one of the first staff members to greet me when I first arrived and helped me enormously. His kindness, interest and leadership was ever present for staff, students and parents alike. Hugh had a big impact on many people. Clearly a life well lived!! Fondly remembering his crinkly eyed laugh.

Dear Jennifer and Christopher,
I am so sad to hear of the loss of your dear dad. He was such a great guy! He was always puttering around camp doing all that needed to be done with that grin of his and always had time for a chat and laugh. I adored him.
May your infinite supply of memories sustain you until you see both Hugh, and your equally amazing Carolea, again.
With sincere condolences,
Gillian (Gill Whyte) Hill

I had Mr. Butters as a teacher at St. Andrew's JHS in the 1980s. So many decades later, I still remember his enthusiasm and positive attitude. I also remember how he teased us that we needed to do our jumping-jacks again because we left out the apostrophe when spelling St. Andrew's! He left a positive and lasting impression on me. He was always kind, encouraging, and shared his love for life and learning. Thanks for everything, Mr. Butters!

From Page Public School to St Andrews, to Tanamakoon, you were all a wonderful part of the mosaic of my childhood. Hugh was one of my favourite teachers of all time. Sending you all lots of love during this very sad time. Oh to all be together again amidst those ceded green canoes.

I was very fortunate to have Mr. Butters as my teacher, during my time at St. Andrew's JHS. He was quite admired by us unruly teens and he personally made a positive difference in my life. He set the bar extremely high, as far as educators go. We used to stand on our desks when he would walk into the classroom, saluting him with admiration. He used to play John Lennon's "Imagine" at the beginning of class. It was an excellent history lesson, indeed.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Butters

Like so many others, I was fortunate to have been a student of Mr. Butters at St Andrew's JHS. He was a great teacher, had a wonderful sense of humour and he put up with Mr Speers constantly interrupting our class, to teach his own "valuable lessons".
Chris, I am so sorry for your loss.

I have fond memories of History class at St. Andrews with Mr. Butters! He knew how to make it engaging. Although I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, it was nice to read about HIS history. It sounds like he lived a wonderful life and has left a beautiful legacy of love for his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. Wishing them, and his many friends and colleagues, peace at this time.

What a loss for the educational system. I wish my kids had such enthusiastic and fun teachers. A rare class that I looked forward to. Mr, Butters, Mr. Speers, and Mr. Renzetti we’re a great trio. My condolences to the family. I’m sure it wasn’t always easy for Chris to be at the same school as his dad :).

I'm so sad to hear this. Mr Butters was my 8th grade history teacher at St. Andrews and made a massive impact on my self-esteem. As an awkward 14 year old girl, he made me feel accepted, welcomed and SMART. RIP to you friend.

My sincere condolences to the family. I met Hugh and Carolea when I worked at Tanamakoon in 1975-6 taking care of the senior staff's children. When Hugh went away for business, young Christopher missed him very much. His Mom asked if I would spend extra time with him so Christopher and I took walks through the grounds making up stories about imaginary woodland creatures. He loved airplanes at the time and I sewed him a felt airplane stuffy. I thoroughly enjoyed those summers at Tanamakoon and I brought the camp songs with me to my next camp as Jr Forest Ranger where we sang some of them as we planted trees near Timmons. I hope that Hugh's family and friends will hold their happy memories close and that they will bring you comfort in the coming days.

I was sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He taught with my dad at St. Andrew's Junior High. I remember seeing him many times when I visited the school. The last time I saw him and your mom was in 2015 at my wedding. I was so glad they could attend. Your dad and mom were always so interested in how I was doing and would often ask my dad to say hello to me for them. Please know your family is in my prayers.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Mr Butters as I knew him became one of my father's (Grif) best friends as they lived and taught together over 20 years at St Andrews. Any time we had the chance to see him his smile and sense of humor always impressed me. I can't tell you how many times over the years he'd send home a copy of Sports Illustrated for me to read and eventually he was sending them home for my son. He was a blessing in my Dad's life and to our entire family!

I had just been thinking about Carolea yesterday, concluding she was really the essence of what Tanamakoon meant to me, as a youngster and then a counselor, over 9 summers. What a wonderful pair, how amazing they found each other, and may I convey what a positive and lasting influence they have had on my life. With thanks to the family for sharing them with the rest of us.
