MacDOUGALL, Rev. Hugh Fraser, S.F.M.
Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, on June 10, 1934. Early schooling was at St. John's Elementary School, Notre Dame High School, Sydney Mines, and Xavier Junior College, Sydney. Graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree at St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Entered Scarboro Foreign Mission Society and was ordained to the priesthood on August 21, 1960. Appointed to St. Vincent, West Indies, in 1961 where he served until 1969. Did post graduate study in Community Development at Edinburgh University, Scotland, in 1971 and 1972, and then returned to St. Vincent. Recalled to Canada and appointed Director of Formation in November 1975. In 1980 went to Africa to investigate possible new mission areas for Scarboro Missions. In January 1983 appointed to language study and to Scarboro's mission in Peru. Recalled to Canada to serve a second time as coordinator of the Formation Education Department. In 1992 was elected to Society leadership as a member of the General Council. From 1995 to 1998 served as pastor of St. Theresa's Shrine parish in Scarborough, Ontario. In 1999 after language studies, assigned to work in Cuba with the Quebec Foreign Mission Society. Died accidentally in Havana, Cuba, on November 13. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Amelia MacDougall; brothers Rev. Angus, pastor of St. Theresa's parish, Sydney, Nova Scotia; Ronald (Ethel), Sydney Mines; and Cameron (Gladys), Antigonish. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection celebrated in Bahia Honda, Cuba, on Thursday, November 15. Memorial Mass to be held on Saturday, November 17, at 10 a.m. at Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, 2685 Kingston Road, Scarborough, Ontario.
