VERNON-JACKSON, Hugh Owen Hardinge (;HOH)
On April 9th, 2001, in hospital, Newbury UK. He leaves wife Jean, daughters Caroline and Helena, and son Gerald, all of the UK. Hugh's retirement in 1991 from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), followed 40 dedicated and eclectic years in international education and development. A graduate of UBC, Washington, London and Columbia universities, his first years made distinguished contributions to formal education and administration in Nigeria, Cameroon, Grenada West Indies, and Swaziland, the latter two being first assignments with CIDA from 1968. In international projects development, Hugh served as CIDA's representative in Lagos, followed by repeat assignments to Addis Ababa, Khartoum and Cairo such was his commitment to that part of Africa. He moved to Cairo in 1993 to pursue studies in Islam and Arab history. Friends throughout the world mourn his passing for his deep regard and love of the cultures and peoples of Africa, for his professionalism, sense of adventure, legendary stories, his iconoclasm, his kindness, hospitality..... and his humanity.
