Ian GORDON Memoriam

In Memoriam Ian Alastair Gordon died one year ago, on May 17, 2023, in Clearwater, BC. Ian was born September 10, 1942, in Nainital, India, the fourth of nine children of Colonel John Gordon and his wife, Georgette. The family left India when Ian was four, and he grew up in beautiful Devon, England, where he developed his love of nature and freedom. He described his childhood as idyllic. He followed in his father and older brothers' footsteps through public school, and thence to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Academics were not his strength, but he excelled in the sports he loved, particularly rugby and cricket, and for his whole life strove without success to master golf. After Sandhurst he joined the Cameronians, a Scottish regiment, somewhat to the chagrin of his father who commented that the Cameronians were always fighting in the bazaars of India. He served in Germany, Kenya, Scotland and Aden (South Yemen). While stationed in Scotland, he served in the Queen's Guard, at Balmoral Castle and loved to tell stories of his time there, including dinners and dances with Her Majesty. He left the army after his time in the war in Aden, and emigrated to Winnipeg in,1967 to marry the mother of his children. In Canada, he began a career in what was then called Personnel, and gained a degree in History from the University of Manitoba. He finished his career in labour relations in Thunder Bay, and started in the investment industry where he combined his love of history and markets to build a business that challenged and excited him. He worked as a stockbroker for several firms in Thunder Bay, Toronto, and Vancouver, until he retired from that business in 2013. He immediately opened his own company, Longwave Group, consulting and financing in the junior gold sector. He authored a newsletter, and developed a website with his theories of financial history and cycles, and travelled worldwide for speaking engagements. The last 35 years of his life were spent with Janice Advent. They shared a love of the outdoors, golf, travel, their pets, and each other. A friend once commented that they reinvented themselves every 10 years. In 2016, they purchased a rural property in the interior of British Columbia, and quickly realized it was where they wanted to be. He is survived by his wife, Janice Advent; his two children, Alix (Jason) Rogers, and Duncan (Yasmin); his grandchildren, Jack Gordon, Reid and Ella Rogers, Isla, India, and Ivy Gordon; brothers David (Jenny) and Charles (Sally); sisters, Johanna (Anthony) Broke-Smith, Angela (Chris) Jones, Philippa (Roy) Pike, and Fiona (Mike) Knight; sister-in-law, Jill; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Anthony, and followed by his older sister, Georgina. Ian was a complex man: of strong will and opinions but with a soft and generous heart; practical and pragmatic but with a belief in the power of mind over matter, visualization, meditation, and past lives. He loved to share his knowledge and experiences and was a passionate teacher. He lived a big life and said that while he had a few regrets, he was unafraid of death and had had a wonderful life. His ashes were scattered at his beloved Tigh-na-Lochan in Little Fort, BC.
