Ian MACKAY Obituary

MACKAY, Ian Kenneth
On February 2, 2006 at the Ottawa General Hospital, age 31. Beloved husband of Rachel Grasham. Eldest son of Robin and Rhondda MacKay, brother of Timothy (Janice) of Hsinchu, Taiwan, David (Lisa) of Guelph and Blake of Nepean. Loving grandson of Myrtle MacKay and son-in- law of Anne and Wilbur Grasham. Ian lived courageously to the end and his hope, enduring spirit and desire to live his life to the fullest never faltered. His optimism and love of life, friendship, generosity and wisdom touched all who knew him. With his grace, intellectual curiosity, artistic creativity, gregarious spirit and love of a good debate, Ian welcomed us all along on the wonderful ride that was his passionate life. Ian loved to paint and listen to music. He read voraciously and was filled with a sense of wonder at the world and the precious gift of his life. Ian, you will be in our hearts and thoughts forever. Friends may celebrate Ian's life at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, All Saints Westboro, Ottawa on Tuesday, February 7 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service on Wednesday, February 8 at 2 p.m. All Saints Westboro (347 Richmond Road, Ottawa). I had the pleasure of sharing many art classes with Ian over the last two years at University of Ottawa. And we also shared a studio space this school year. Ian always offered a respectful, novel and interesting viewpoint to any discussion. Some of my art creations were greatly improved after good exchanges with Ian.

I can still hear him trying to convince me to see the Blue Man Group. Well Ian, I finally did, and it was well worth it, thanks! I will always associate the group with you.

Keep giving sound artistic critiques from your peaceful resting place! See you!

I met Ian through the Visual Arts program at Ottawa U. Although he was only in a couple of my classes and I only saw him once and a while, I grew to love speaking with him about art and whatever was on our minds. Ian will forever be remembered at school as creative and good hearted.

I was Ian's teacher in photography last year. He was a very special person: very generous with his classmates as well as very intelligent and creative. I'm glad to have met him. I don't know Rachel, but he always included you when he spoke of himself. You must be pretty special too. My thoughts are with you.

I have many fond memories of Ian and feel so grateful that I saw him several times in December. Ian was somebody who I always had a great conversation with about current affairs (he was a avid reader and kept in the loop on a range of political and social issues)and a very talented painter - I loved to look at his artwork when I visited their apartment.

And as Rachel's friend, perhaps most importantly, he was the love of Rachel's life - such a great match in so many ways. I am so happy that you were in each other's lives and so sad about the tragic loss. You are both in my prayers.

As an old friend of Rachel's, it was through her that I met Ian. I was struck by his incredible spirit in the face of adversity, his wit and intellect, and his talent with his art. He brought so much happiness to my friend in the way that he completed her life, and the memory of all that I knew of him will live on in my heart.
