Ian Martin
March 29, 1922 - January 27, 2016

Surrounded by his loving family Ian passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the age of 93. Loving husband of Diana for 56 wonderful years of marriage. Ian is survived by his children, Wendy (Peter), Herb, Ernie and Tania (Stephen); he was predeceased by Lorraine and Charley; his grandchildren, Charles (Jennifer), Andrea (Paul), Conrad (Zuleika), Tara (Luis), Michael (Leah), Alaina, Campbell, Fraser and Colin; 9 great- grandchildren, with one on the way.
  He will be deeply missed by his siblings and their families in Australia; Barbara, Bruce (Margaret) and Margaret. He was predeceased by his sister, Dawn.
  He had a large and loving family and lifelong friends that became our extended family.
  Ian was born outside of Canberra, Australia where he lived until the outbreak of World War II, when he joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He trained as a fighter pilot across Canada as part of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war he completed his architectural studies with distinction and was the President of his Faculty at the University of Sydney. He then returned to Montreal where he established his own practice and started his life in Canada with Diana at his side.
  Ian Martin Architects established their reputation quickly with notable projects in Montreal including Port Royal, Cantlie House, Rockland Shopping Centre, and Galleries de la Capitale in Quebec City amongst many others. One of his proudest achievements was to be awarded the Massey Foundation Medal for Architecture. His continued building across Quebec, Ontario and in the United States, until Ian finally handed in his Architectural Stamp at the age of 85.
  He never lost his passion for design, or the creative process. His love of beautiful design informed every aspect of his life. He was an avid reader who never stopped learning.
  He also never lost his love of flying and he continued to fly gliders into his sixties. A true bon vivant life with Ian was always an adventure, with fireworks celebrations, cigars, sports cars and travel throughout the world. He never slowed down even when driving on his scooter - his 'Ferrari' with his grandsons.
  His journey continues, as does ours without him. We will miss this wonderful man.
  Many thanks to the medical team at Mt. Sinai Hospital who kept his final days calm and tranquil. Their dedicated care was greatly appreciated.
  A service celebrating his life will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Visitation Centre on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at his daughter's house.
