IAN McDOUGALL Obituary

Ian Walter McDougall, C.M. - musician, composer, educator, and one of the world's most distinguished jazz trombonists, passed away peacefully, on January 26, 2026. He was 87. Born on June 14, 1938, in Calgary and raised in Victoria, Ian discovered music early and embraced the trombone at his father's encouragement - advice that would inspire a remarkable career spanning seven decades. By his early teens, he was already performing in local venues, displaying the musicality, discipline, and determination that would define his life's work. Ian's professional journey took him across Canada and around the world. In the early 1960s, he toured Great Britain with the John Dankworth Band, an experience that launched him into the international jazz scene. Upon returning to Canada, he became a central figure in the country's jazz community, contributing as a performer, composer, and arranger in Vancouver, Toronto, and beyond. He is perhaps best known for his long tenure as lead and solo trombonist with Rob McConnell's celebrated ensemble, The Boss Brass, with whom he performed and recorded extensively, and earned both JUNO awards and a Grammy. His many compositions remain staples of Canadian big band and orchestra repertoire. Beyond the stage, Ian was a devoted educator. As a professor at the University of Victoria, he mentored generations of young musicians, sharing not only his technical mastery but also his deep love of music. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2003, later receiving the university's Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to Canadian music. Ian's achievements were also recognized at the highest national level; In 2008, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's most prestigious civilian honours. Ian's artistry was matched by his generosity, humility, and humour. Whether performing for thousands or teaching a single student, he brought the same warmth, curiosity, and dedication to his craft. His influence can be heard in the countless musicians he inspired, and in the enduring recordings that showcase his lyrical tone and impeccable musicianship. Ian McDougall's trombone voice - rich, expressive, and unmistakably his - will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who loved him and in the soundscape of Canadian jazz for generations to come. Above all his professional achievements, and most importantly, Ian was a wonderful grandfather, a loving father, and a devoted husband. He is survived by his many great-grandchildren and grandchildren, along with his children: Donald, Nelson, Joanna, Marc and Laura; and his wife, Barb. A widespread community of colleagues, students, and admirers will carry his artistic legacy forward. Ian's life was shortened by vascular dementia; a brain disease that slowly and increasingly affected his cognitive abilities in the last few years of his life. In lieu of flowers and in his memory, we ask you to support the performing arts and consider contributing to brain health research.

Dear Barb and family,
Sorry for your loss. What a fine man Ian was. I always enjoyed our visits and felt that I got more out of them than I was able to give. He will be remembered for his positive human spirit that was infectious.

Dear Barb, Laura, Marc, Joanna, Nelson and Donald,
I just got a call from Valerie Freeman Bray with the sad news of the passing of our cousin, Ian. On behalf of all of us in the family of George Sr. and
Kay Cormack,I send sympathy and condolences.
His Mother, our Aunt Tillie, was a loving presence in our lives and we followed Ian's career with such pride! I am grateful to have Ian's recordings which I admire and play often. I regret that we were not able to connect with Ian (and family) after he moved east--no phone or address for our yearly Christmas photo/letter. May you all find great comfort in your wonderful memories of family gatherings and all of the wonderful music and honours that he shared with you. We only got to hear him live once when he played in Calgary!
We send our love and blessings to all of you.

Such a fun and wonderful uncle. Larger than life, a musical giant, kind and funny and a lover of life. Thank you, Iany, for your many contributions!

I played in Ian's first big band at UVic during the summer of 87 in the M.Ed. program. He adjudicated my high school groups on a number of occasions, was kind enough to mentor a couple of my students as well while on their way to post secondary music. He was an icon, not only as a professional musician but as an educator and a wonderful human being. He will be missed.

Ian, an esteemed figure in Canadian music! Player, teacher, composer...he did it all with such creative energy. I've known Ian since the nights at Isy's and through his compositions, played by the CBC Radio Orchestra and his duet Conversations, written for Dennis Miller and I. RIP Ian and hugs to Barbara and the family.

Ian and my father, Doug Parker, worked for many years in radio, television and clubs in Vancouver. He was a great musician and a lovely man and I know my Dad thought very highly of him. My thoughts and condolences are with his family at this difficult time and I hope they know how much his music contributed to the fabric of the Canadian music scene.

Barb, deepest sympathies and condolelnces to you and your family. The music world mourns the loss of one the great musicians. I never tire of listening to his smooth sound and inventive music. I remember going to the Cellar in Victoria where he and Donnie Clark used to perform. He was probably 20 and very talented then. He will be missed.

Remembering Ian McDougall. What a wonderful man! Ian was the acting Chair of the Theatre Department, at the University of Victoria for one year, and I was the luckiest Department secretary to have worked with him at that time. Ian made my time in the department so much fun. His sense of humour and joy were infectious. My husband Ranjit and I will never forget him and are glad to have known him.
Our condolences to Barb and his family and friends.
Love, Barb and Ranjit Dillon

My condolences to Ian's family. The concerts he put on with his students at UVic gave me great pleasure over the years. It was obvious how much he loved what he was doing.
