IAN CRAIG MUNRO Ph.D., F.A.T.S., FRCPath
September 13th, 1939 - April 27th, 2011
It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. Ian C. Munro announces his passing, at home with his family by his side, after a 3 year battle with prostate cancer, on Wednesday April 27th 2011 at the age of 71. He leaves behind his wife Jayne (nee Byrne) of 33 years, his brother Alastair (Mary), special nieces Alexandra (Manolito Della Vedova), Amy and many friends and colleagues. He was the son of the late Dorothy and Frank Munro of Richmond, Ontario. He was one of the founding shareholders of Cantox in 1985 and President from 1990 to 2006. Dr. Munro formerly held senior positions at Health Canada as Director of the Bureau of Chemical Safety and Director General of the Food Directorate, Health Protection Branch. While with the Health Protection Branch, Dr. Munro was responsible for research and standard setting activities of the Branch related to microbial and chemical hazards in food and the nutritional quality of the Canadian food supply. Dr. Munro was a world renowned scientist who graduated from McGill University in biochemistry and nutrition and held a Ph.D. from Queen's University in pharmacology and toxicology. A past member of the Board of Directors of the Toxicology Forum, Dr. Munro held memberships in the Society of Toxicology and the American College of Toxicology. He served on numerous national and international committees, including those of the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Munro was a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, London. He was also Director of the Canadian Centre for Toxicology from 1983 to 1992 and a professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He received the Achievement Award from the Society of Toxicology in 1975, awarded to those who have made significant contributions to Toxicology. In 2005, he received The Bernard L. Oser Award for leadership in establishing principles for food safety evaluation or regulation and in 2010, The Crampton Award for his contribution to the field of Nutrition. In 2011, he and his wife established the Ian and Jayne Munro Chair in Food Safety at McGill University. Visitation will be held in Ottawa at Tubman Funeral Home, Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Rd, Nepean on Wednesday, May 4th from 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the Tubman Funeral Home Garden Chapel on Thursday, May 5th at 11am, burial to follow at Beechwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held in Mississauga at the Delta Meadowvale Conference Centre, Wednesday, May 11th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ian and Jayne Munro Chair in Food Safety, McGill University or the Credit Valley Hospital ­ Department of Oncology.
