IAN MURRAY Obituary

Ian Alexander Murray, CA (Scot), FCA, FCPA (November 16, 1952 – January 14, 2026) Ian Alexander Murray of Aberdeen, Scotland, passed away peacefully, on January 14, 2026, at the age of 73, after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan; sons, Doug (Katerina) and Neil (Janice); brother, Phil (Ika); and grandchildren, Alex, Victoria, Parker, and Campbell. Ian cherished time with his family, enjoying the cottage, riding bikes, playing ping pong, and sharing his wisdom. Ian was the epitome of a gentleman. He spent over 35 years with KPMG, retiring as an Audit Partner, and served on numerous boards including the Trillium Hospital Foundation, United Way Peel, Start2Finish, and Golf Ontario (GAO), where he was named an Honorary Life Director. A lifelong golfer, Ian began playing at age four and was part of the winning team of the Scottish Universities Golf Championship. He played to a four handicap and continued golf throughout his life at Trafalgar and Rattlesnake Golf Clubs. In retirement, he also became an avid tennis player. Ian will be remembered for his quiet strength, dry humour, and devotion to family. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring; details to be announced. Donations in his memory may be made to the Oakville Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Joan, I am so sad to learn of Ian's passing. I well remember the many meetings we shared as he served as the Chairman of the Canadian Auditng Standards Board and later as Canada's member on the International Audit Standards Board. He was a consummate professional and an absolute gentleman. Esther joins me in extending our heartfelt condolences and sympathies.

I worked with Ian when I first joined KPMG. I still remember the day he walked in towards me and smiled at me and said "you will be working on this engagement with me". That was around 18 years ago. We will miss him and his contributions to the firm, to society. And most importantly we can only now empathize and sympathize with the family. He was such a great person! MHSRIP

I worked with Ian back at KPMG. He was known for a having a dry wit but he was a fair boss and was always professional. I know he loved his golfing, too. May God bless his soul.

I was absolutely gutted to hear of Ian's passing. It goes without saying thay he was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. My mother, father and I will always remember him for his strength of character, and the love he shared with all. My heart goes out to Joan, and their children and grandchildren. We will look back on our time knowing him fondly, and never forget the friend that Mr. Murray had become to us.

My deepest sympathies to Joan and family. I always enjoyed playing golf with Ian particularly on road trips to PEI and his beloved Scotland.
It was Ian who recruited me to the Board of the Trillium Health Center in the mid nineties. Over the years it has become my "go to" charity
Rest in peace my friend. Gerry Beasley

Ian and Joan were the first couple we met when we came to Kitchener from Scotland 45 years ago. They became very special friends to us and we spent many happy Christmas times together with our children.
We will always remember his great sense of humour around the table together.
A wonderful guy and a blessing to have known him.

Joan and Family

My deepest sympathies. I had the pleasure of working with Ian at Thorne Ernst & Whinney in the Mississauga office for a number of years. What a great man he was and we had a lot of laughs during that time. I found a picture with Ian, Bruce Rutherford, Doug King, Peter Martens and Don Bruce at a golf day event back in the day. We had so much fun together it was a pleasure to go to work each day. I was deeply saddened with the news of his passing. Thoughts and prayers go out to your family.
