Ian ... You were the Matriarch of the Russel side of our family. Thank-you so much for keeping that intact for our mother’s ... Auntie Eve and Doreen. I will deeply miss the companionship that you endeavoured to keep. Until we meet again ... Paul

I am sorry for your loss. Ian had a big positive effect on my life. We spent a lot of time together as children on our grandfathers farm in Morton. Then my family moved to Alberta and I did not see him again until 1967 when i decided to catch a boat to Europe from Toronto. I first went to KIngston to visit our grandparents and also met up with Ian who was a student at Queens. Each evening for a few days, he invited me to join him and his friends for a series of mind-expanding dinners and drinks where he and his friends talked about the issues of the day. The way they talked about their studies was so thoughtful and insightful that I realized that my world view was much too impoverished and I became inspired to be able to think and analyze the world like they did. I abandoned my travel plans and drove back to Alberta and enrolled in a school where I finished grade 12, which i had quit as soon as i turned 16, four years earlier. I qualified for University then completed a series of degrees and spent 37 years as a professor at Stanford and Berkeley. I now work in philanthropy, giving away the fortune of one of the Facebook founders to try and improve the lives of the world's disadvantaged people. I have thought many times of Ian's profound and positive influence on my life and remain grateful.
