IAN WHITE Obituary

IAN PHILIP WHITEIan Philip White, 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home in the Kingsway on Sunday, April 30, 2023 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. Ian was a kind, calm soul, who devoted his life to his wife, family, cottaging, and numerous do-it-yourself projects. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his son, James, his daughters-in-law, Elizabeth and Pamela, his step-daughters, Kimberly (Keith) and Tamara (Will); and his grandchildren, Owen, Sebastian, and Avery, Hayden and Dawson, Meghan and Tyler, Leo and Max, and his brother Colin. Ian bravely fought numerous battles with cancer over the years and he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara, and his son, Scott. Ian was born, in Toronto, as a first generation family member from England on April 23, 1947. Ian followed in his father's footsteps with a love and mind for creation and industry, and he became an engineer. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he became an engineering executive in the forest products industry where he spent most of his career. Ian summered on Lake Simcoe as a young man, and this is where he developed his love of cottaging, working on endless projects, the outdoors, and Lake Simcoe is also where he met his first wife, Barbara Noakes. Together, they raised a family in Toronto and on Simcoe until Barb's passing in 1997. In 2000, Ian remarried, and together, Ian and Sue, continued a love for cottaging on Lake of Bays, travelling, tennis, boating, and spending time with their family. Ian's love of Sue, his nine grandchildren, kayaking, canoeing, walking, problem solving, and hockey, having been a goalie for years, was well known to all who shared his time. Ian was a wise sage to his family and friends. Ian had a kind word and smile for everyone even during his hardest times. Ian's thoughtful, kind, and calm nature was admired and appreciated by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Visitors are welcome at a Celebration of Life to be held at The Boulevard Club on 1491 Lakeshore Blvd West, in Toronto, on Saturday, May 13, 2023, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dorothy Ley Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society.

I only found out yesterday of Ian's passing. I worked with Ian for the Lake of Bays Association. He was dedicated to lake stewardship, lake health and enjoyed leadership in many organizations and committees.
Ian succeeded me as President of the association. I too enjoyed his calmness and gentle approach to challenges. I am sad about the news. He will be missed in our Lake of Bays Community.

Dear Sue and family, Ian was a quiet kind man. Roy and I enjoyed getting to know him and his family being Neighbors at Lake of b a y s. I still remember him helping Roy dismantle our d o c k after the high water problem a few years ago. He loved cottaging and Lake of b a y s. He will be missed.

Sue & family- I was shocked to hear of Ian's illness earlier this year and then of his passing on April 30. I worked closely with Ian on LOBA (and succeeded him as President with his wise and thoughtful mentoring). Ian never had to raise his voice in meetings to get his points across- he spoke sparingly and clearly and only when he had something important to say. And everyone listened. We were so fortunate to have his thoughtful, elegant counsel at LOBA for so many years and we miss him. With my sincere sympathies and best wishes.
