Ivan CHITTENDEN Obituary

IVAN ROBERT CHITTENDEN Ivan Robert Chittenden, of Toronto, Canada, and Frisco, Texas, passed away tragically on Sunday, August 20, 2023, in Cork, Ireland, whilst participating in a triathlon event there. Ivan was born in Brantford, Ontario, on October 6, 1958, to Edna and Robert Chittenden. Ivan was predeceased by his parents; and by his first wife, Dianne Dyer; as well as by his nephew, Craig Chittenden. Ivan leaves behind to mourn him his beloved wife, Dr. Siobhan Hyland; and his dear stepchildren, Jack and Kate; his brother, Roger (Candy); mother-in-law, Patricia Hyland; sisters-in-law, Debra Latcham and Dr. Jacqueline Hyland (Tim Hindman); and brother-in-law, Terry Hyland ( Kristyn ); as well as by nieces, nephews, and grand-nephew in Canada and the US. After graduating high school, Ivan went on to study business at Wilfrid Laurier University. Just out of school, he joined Ernst & Young in Toronto, where he spent a long and notable career that spanned six decades. Ivan was both a professional practice partner and audit partner for the firm, serving as the global coordinating partner for many of EY Canada's largest global accounts. Ivan retired from EY in 2021, but continued his work as a consultant with the firm. A long-time runner, Ivan became an endurance athlete in his early 50s. He competed in ironman races across the globe, from Canada to Zell am See, Austria, and completed all six of the World Marathon Majors - Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York City and Tokyo. He was also a long-time member of the Toronto Athletic Club and the Weston Golf & Country Club. In 2012 he met his cherished, Siobhan, and began a romance for the ages. The two shared a love that was apparent to all. Ivan was a devoted stepfather who treasured his stepchildren, Jack and Kate, and the time he spent with them. His love for life and ability, always, to see the positive, was a joy and inspiration to everyone he encountered. Ivan was a consummate professional, a wonderful friend, and encouraging mentor to all who knew him. Although we are heartbroken, we take comfort from knowing how much he enriched our lives. His legacy of love and kindness will endure. A celebration of Ivan's life will be scheduled in the upcoming days with details to follow. Remembrances, if desired, may be directed to the National Ballet of Canada, where Ivan and Siobhan enjoyed so many performances over the years. 'What do we do when our hearts hurt?"'asked the boy. 'We wrap them with friendship, shared tears and time, till they wake hopeful and happy again.' Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse

Wow , what a heart breaker. Ivan was so smart and always such a gentleman. We had many celebrations at Clarkson Gordon and later E&Y. He was always available for sound advice on complex matters. My condolences to his wife and family.

With a heavy heart, I extend my deepest condolences to you, the family, and Ivan Chittenden's friends. This remarkable individual's recent passing has left a void that many will feel. I am writing to express my sympathy and share in the collective grief accompanying the loss of such a distinguished and respected figure.

I had the privilege of knowing Ivan through our shared roles as Directors on the Board of Commonwealth Sport Canada, where he exhibited an unwavering commitment to the ideals of amateur sports and the pursuit of athletic excellence. Ivan's passion for the Commonwealth Games and profound pride in his country were evident in every interaction. His dedication to the organization and a genuine love for sports and the athletes made him a natural and invaluable asset to our cause.

Ivan's contributions to the Board were immeasurable. His effectiveness in navigating complex issues and his ability to listen attentively and provide insightful commentary were instrumental in shaping the strategies that added to the long legacy of the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada. At the Board table, he consistently demonstrated a commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the pursuit of excellence, encouraging all of us to strive for 'better continually.'

During our years of collaboration, I also had the pleasure of knowing his first wife, Dianne, who was an incredible partner and supporter. The news of her passing came as a further surprise, compounding the sense of loss. Ivan and Dianne contributed significantly to the spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose that defined our collective efforts.

Ivan's kindness, forthright nature, and integral approach endeared him to us all. His encouragement and unwavering support were a source of inspiration, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure in the memories of those fortunate enough to have worked alongside him.

In these difficult times, may you find solace in the cherished memories of Ivan and Dianne. Please accept my heartfelt condolences, and may the love and support of friends and family provide comfort as you navigate through this period of mourning.

Rest in Peace, dear Ivan. Your presence will be sorely missed, but your impact on the world of sports and the lives you touched will be remembered with deep admiration and gratitude.

With sincere sympathy

Ivan and I trained for our first Half Ironman together. Long bike rides and therapeutic talks about life, we would ride up and down the hills of Caledon working through life´s challenges. As he passed me on the run of Half Ironman at Deerhurst, he apologized as he saw me struggling. A real gentleman. We lost touch but spoke of doing another race together, alas it never happened. My condolences to his family. A great loss. Rest well my old friend.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Ivan. We first met back in September 1977 at Wilfrid Laurier University in the Hon. BBA Program.
He was a strong academic individual, but also liked to have fun.
We salute his successes and thoughts are with the family at this time.

It breaks my heart to read of the passing of Ivan. We met in our first year calculus class at WLU in 1977. It was immediately obvious to me and a buddy how bright Ivan was. He would eventually become the Gold Medal winner of our graduating class of 1981 for the BBA program. He accomplished so much at WLU academically with charm and humility. RIP Ivan.

I had the privilege of knowing Ivan Chittenden when I taught his step-children, Jack and Kate piano lessons in my home. Ivan was always faithful to the task of getting Jack and Kate to their lessons on time. He was a very kind and loving person. My heart goes out to his beautiful wife, Siobhan, and to Jack and Kate and all the other members of Ivan's family.

Siobhan & family, Roger, Candy & family......my deepest sympathies. What a well lived life Ivan enjoyed; I'm very proud to call him my cousin as I ponder childhood memories especially times spent at our grandparents' farm. A bit of irony that Ivan died on the shores of the very island from which our great grandparents emigrated as they set out on their journey to Canada.
RIP Ivan,

Ivan was a wonderful addition to our family's life for almost 40 years. He was in fact a cherished Nicoll/McInnis family member. It wasn't Christmas or Easter and Birthday celebrations if Ivan wasn't there to balance out our rambunctious Scottish celebrations and to host his own pre Christmas fabulous fete each year. Words just can not express the loss we shall all feel. He'll never be forgotten in our minds and hearts.
