Jack MAHON Obituary

JACK (JOHN) STANLEY MAHON September 27, 1927 - December 4, 2020 In his 94th year, Jack ('UJ' to many) battled bravely to stay with us as long as possible in order to enjoy happy times with his 7 nieces and nephews, 10 great-nieces and nephews, 6 great-grandnieces and nephews, and of course his many dear and loyal friends. But he took his last breath with the firm knowledge that he was going to join his dear sister Marion (Howes), his parents Stan and Mercedes Mahon, many other loved ones, and his Lord. Jack's family hailed from Sudbury and Mt. St. Louis, Ontario. Jack himself was born in Detroit, Michigan in the time when Detroit and Windsor were like one big city. The family moved to Toronto where Jack grew up in St. James parish (west end). He had such great fun at St. Michael's high school and college (University of Toronto), as well as memorable family times especially listening to his Aunt Irene Mahon sing on the radio, or turning her sheet music as she sang at the family piano. Life only got better when he moved to Montreal to work for London Life (mortgage division) for 8 fantastic years, where he made lifelong friends and also became a loyal Habs fan. Jack transferred back to Toronto and retired there from London Life after 36 years of service, having made many more terrific friends. He was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace parish from 1954, where for many years he was a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In 2005 he moved into Richview Residence enjoying many more special friendships, and also serving on the Residents' Association and the Community Care Services advisory board. He developed a deep respect for the Baptist community there. UJ was with his nephew Kevin, listening to his beloved Anne Murray, when he passed. Jack was an upbeat and positive man who flattered and charmed everyone he met. He would break into song at the drop of a hat. He was generous of spirit and hospitality, open-minded, sentimental, grateful for small kindnesses and had an amazing zest for life. His memory was prodigious and we will remember him for it and for so much more. He was well loved and will be truly missed by those whose lives he touched.

I met John on several occasions as he was a friend of my mother, Isabel Hills, who was one of the Wilson girls. They always referred to him as Jackie and when I wrote to him and called him in November of this year and called him Jackie he immediately knew who I must be. Thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and he had so many good stories and memories that he shared. Was looking so forward to talking to him again but unfortunately he passed before I could followup. He would be the last of the Detroit, Windsor gang, families that were so very close. My grandfather Wilson toasted Jackie's sister at her wedding and I have the feeling that many toasts are being raised in heaven as Jackie has joined the gang at last. My deepest condolences to his family who I know he greatly loved, admired and bragged about in our latest conversation.

Our hearts go out to all of you on the loss of your Uncle Jack.
Jack & I met 60 years ago when we were both employed by London Life Mortgage and our friendship blossomed from there. Jack lived with other out of town boys at the infamous "357" Kensington Ave, Westmount run by the McGuiness siblings Kay,Dot and brother Steve. The first time I was invited to dinner I arrived on the stoop which was in total darkness. I rang the bell and was scolded by Kay when she answered the door in her long apron saying"Do you think I have time to come to the door when I am preparing dinner, the door is always unlocked. Oh, the 1960's ! The boys could not stop laughing.
Jack always said that his 8 years in Montreal were the best years of his life every time we spoke. His favourite restaurant was "Bens" for their smoke meat sandwiches which was his first restaurant stop when visiting.
The "HABS" will certainly miss him as will we all.
We will have a tree planted in his honour come spring

I am sorry for your loss....I worked with Jack at London Life for many years. He was a friend and co worker that we had so many lovely times together. I will miss Jack and the fun times we had. I was quite young (first job) and he made me feel welcomed.

My deepest condolences to all Jacks nieces and nephews. He spoke of you all often and how much he adored each and every one of you.
I had the privilege of meeting Jack at the Richview Residence six years ago. Jack and my Father Donald would eat dinner together every night. My dad passed last year on December 15th and Jack attended the funeral and spoke in front of the crowd of all of their good times at the coffee shop where a group of men would go once a month. I was so happy that he wanted to speak.
My sister and I had promised to come back to Richview and have dinner with him and he said "yes your Dad would want that. Like so many things COVID took that away from us and I so wish I could have joined Jack for dinner.
He said to me at the funeral " I just wish I had of known you and your Father long before now." I say to you Jack that I so wish that too." My heart is richer for knowing him.
To all of you he is your guiding light and he is with you. He was so proud of the blankets that he used to have made every time there was a new baby in your family and I hope one of you will carry that on. Also make sure when the Canadiana does open that you all enjoy a dinner there...is so loved that place.
Find happiness and laughter in all your memories of your wonderful Uncle...he was such a gem.

It is with deep sadness that I extend my sympathy to the Howes family. “Cousin Jack” was like a brother to my mother, Peggy (Walter) Mahon (d. 2016). It was he who introduced mom to his cousin from Winnipeg, my dad, Larry Mahon (d.1988). I am honoured to be one of his many godchildren.
Jack’s impressive memory proved useful in discussions about the Mahon family tree as well as the re-telling of tales from life in St Jame’s Parish and fun times on Humber Trail.
May he Rest In Peace and enjoy the ‘family reunion’ with our sainted parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.

I remember Uncle Jack as clearly as I remember your parents. He was so sweet, always had a smile and lots to say. No wonder he was such a popular man!
My condolences to each of you who called him uncle. I know you will miss him greatly.
