It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jack Stein on December 27, 2014 after a short illness.
Husband of Natalie, father and father-in-law of Michael Stein and Martha Dirks, Richard Stein and Chanit Pirotsky, Jonathan Stein and Beth Kwavnick, grandfather of Samuel, Olivia, Jonah, Sophie, Adam, Mira and Emily and brother and brother-in-law of Bob and Analee.
Jack was born in downtown Toronto on July 6, 1938. He attended Harbord Collegiate and grew up with a love of sports and music. After graduating from medical school at the University of Toronto in 1962, he went on to complete his fellowship in rheumatology at the Rheumatic disease Unit, Wellesley Hospital, Toronto in 1969. He spent his career working and teaching at Scarborough General Hospital from 1969 until he retired in 2014.
Jack had many accomplishments over his medical career. He was involved with many aspects of medical education and leadership. He was director of the Internship program from 1978-92, Chief of medicine 1979-95 and Deputy Chief of staff 1995-2007 at The Scarborough General Hospital. He was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and worked and taught for many years at Sunnybrook Hospital.   Jack was much loved, especially by his patients. After he retired, a patient of his wrote: 'You've made such an incredible difference in the quality of my life, tending to both my medical and emotional concerns, caring for my life as well as my illness.' He always had a friendly smile and encouraging words for his family, colleagues, trainees and patients. He was a wonderful husband to Natalie for 50 years, father and grandfather and even during his illness was concerned only for the well being of his family. Jack loved life and will be missed by all whom he touched.
