Jake PALAHNUK Obituary

JAKE MATTHEW PALAHNUK January 25, 1984 - November 28, 2023 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jake Palahnuk on November 28, 2023. Jake passed away suddenly at his home in Toronto due to a heart-related issue. Jake is survived by his mother Terri Petkau (Don) and his younger brother and biggest fan, Nicholas Palahnuk. Jake was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario. While he grew up in southern Ontario and graduated from Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton, Jake maintained a special relationship with the North where his late father lived, spending many summers in and around Thunder Bay. Jake was musically inclined from a young age, starting off as a talented drummer in school. In 2004, shortly after graduating high school, Jake picked up the bass guitar in order to join the band, Turn Off the Stars. This was Jake's first taste of professional music, and he loved it. Jake toured with Turn Off the Stars until 2009, producing music and performing in front of audiences across North America. In 2009, Jake became a founding member of internationally acclaimed and Juno-nominated rock band, Young Empires. In 2011, the band released their debut EP, 'Wake All My Youth,' featuring their breakthrough track, 'White Doves,' which was followed by the 2015 release of 'The Gates' LP. Known for their infectious hooks and high-energy sets, Young Empires would go on to entertain thousands, touring extensively and playing festivals around the world. In recent years, Jake continued to contribute to the musical community through his work in concert production management, making connections and providing support to musical artists from across the globe. Jake is fondly remembered for his warmth, kindness, and his incredible skill. Jake was a gentle soul with a kind heart, who strongly believed in giving back and helping those around him. He championed inclusion and would spend much of his time coaching and supporting others. Jake was an incredibly generous spirit, and he will be profoundly missed. A Celebration of Life for Jake will be held at the Royal Ontario Museum on December 18, 2023, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Donations can be made in Jake's honour to Wildlands League, a conservation organization dedicated to protecting the Ontario wilderness that Jake so loved. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

I work at the hotel in Palm Springs, California where Jake would stay when he was in town. The entire team here will miss him greatly. We all were instantly fond of him as soon as we met him. He was funny, kind, warm and great to be around. He formed friendships with many of us and we were all eagerly awaiting his return to the desert. He made an impression on many of us, that he was generous with his kindness and the most friendly guest we ever hosted, often visiting us in the lobby to talk music or just getting to know us. Guests like Jake are so rare. Ones that you really make friends with. And for this he will be greatly missed by his Palm Springs family. My condolences to the family of such a wonderful man.

Terri and Nicholas, please accept my condolences for the loss of your son, brother and friend. I met Jake a few times through my son, Matt, a colleague of Jake's from Young Empires. He was a lovely young man and I mourn his loss. I would like to share a few photos, in case you do not have them. These are photos of good times that I hope will help to soften your grief.
