JAMES MICHAEL BRADLEY James Michael Bradley passed away peacefully on December 2, 2022, following a stroke. Born on November 30, 1939, in Niagara Falls, ON, to Shirley (née Upper) and Harold Bradley, Michael attended Niagara Falls Collegiate Vocational Institute, and enjoyed playing hockey and piano, and spending his summers at the Upper farm near Welland. In 1957, he went to England to study at Haileybury before going on to Cambridge where he took law at St. John's College. Returning to Toronto, he completed his LLB at the University of Toronto Law School and began working for Fraser & Beatty, where he was employed as a tax lawyer for more than 30 years. During that time, he worked with Margaret Atwood and the Writers' Union to ensure that writers' contracts and royalties were protected. He also worked with Noreen Taylor to establish the RBC Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction, a project that was dear to his heart. Michael enjoyed skiing, tennis and travelling, and summers spent at the family cottage in Muskoka, where he could be found arguing happily with friends and family, a dog by his side, and a glass of scotch in hand. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Susan Bradley; daughters, Sarah (Brad Heys) and Lynne; and grandchildren, Clare and Emma Heys and Ian and Lily Bradley. While at Fraser & Beatty, he was supported by his loyal secretary, Alison Parker, and more latterly by the very patient, Pam Rimmer. When his health declined, he was fortunate to have a beloved caregiver, Jina Prieur, whose help was appreciated not only by Michael but also by the family. A small gathering for family and friends has been planned for December 18. Charitable donations may be made to
one's charity of choice.
