James BRADSHAW Obituary

James Alexander Bradshaw, Q. C.
   (1932-2016)

Jim died peacefully in the early hours of Saturday, July 16th. He is already missed by his wife of 55 years, Suzanne; his children, Sarah, Tim (Rindy), Miranda (Peter Sorensen) and Ben (Anna-Lisa Brewer); his brother, Mel (Carol Jackson); his eleven grandchildren ('Poppa' to Angus, Melina, Quinn, Jake, Abigail, Max, Astrid, Tessa, Emmett, Desmond and Clive); his father's second wife, Margaret; and his niece, nephews and cousins. Jim was predeceased by his brother, William (Pam) and his parents, Ruth and Melville Bradshaw.
Jim earned a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Commerce from the University of Toronto, and a law degree from Osgoode Hall, where he was a Gold Medalist in 1958. Jim spent his career with Campbell, Godfrey and Lewtas (later Fasken Martineau), which he regarded as a place of both work and friendship. He was very fond of his partners and associates, and took genuine interest in the student lawyers, mentoring them in his 'firm but fair' way. His work with clients extended beyond executing a transaction, as he built lifelong friends through his involvement with Upper Lakes Shipping, Crownx, Dominion Securities and others. Jim contributed generously to his community, giving of his time, wisdom and resources. He was actively involved in Bloor Street United Church, the Palliative Care Foundation, and the Festival Singers of Canada, and assumed leadership roles with the United Way of Toronto, Ojibway Club, National Club, and Queen City Indoor Tennis Club.
Jim and Sue established two joyful homes for their growing family: the first in Wychwood Park, around which Jim loved to walk a dog and connect with neighbours; and the second on Georgian Bay at Pointe- au-Baril, where Jim honed sailing skills developed as a child on Lake Simcoe at Eastbourne. Though he sometimes returned ashore with bloody shins, numb fingers, and a mutinous crew, he simply loved 'messing around' in sailboats. Another evident passion was his family, their friends, and his grandchildren, all of whom he generously supported. Looking recently at photos, we were reminded how much Jim loved reading stories to his grandchildren, and how much they loved listening to him. Finally, Sue and Jim shared a love for classical music, and especially opera. Fittingly, Jim requested Wagner's Ring on his last night.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 26th at 3:00 p.m. at Bloor Street United Church (300 Bloor Street West). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to United Way Toronto & York Region. Jim and his family will be forever grateful for the tremendous care provided by Angela Millwood over the past few years. Special thanks must also go to his devoted team at Christie Gardens and the staff at Toronto Western Hospital. The location of his final days was not lost on his family, who noted that through his 84 years Jim somehow managed to stay within a stone's throw of Bathurst Street in Toronto.
