James CADE Obituary

JAMES ROBERT CADE (Jim) November 14, 1949 - July 13, 2022 James "Jim" Robert Cade was a black belt in BBQ and was happiest in an apron preparing a meal for his family and friends. He returned from many vacations with a new sauce or spice or rub, and if he'd ever bothered to submit his ribs for competition, they would have shut the whole thing down. Jim was a loud and gifted storyteller, and an even better audience: a man with an infectious and encouraging laugh best described as a rumbling giggle that began mid-story and rose like a tide to the punchline. An evening with Rob and Roger and Paul left him in tears. Jim loved music, and for many years a picture of him with his French horn hung on the wall in the band room at Etobicoke Collegiate, from which he graduated in 1967. Jim embedded the Beach Boys and the Travelling Wilburys in his children's dna on summer minor league baseball road trips and winter ski trips. When his daughter Emily was young, he would often sing, "There she is, Miss America," whenever she walked into a room, and instead of playing air guitar, Jim would air conduct, as though he was standing in front of an orchestra and not listening to Free Fallin'. Jim studied history and political science at the University of Western Ontario and graduated from Osgoode Hall in 1973. He was called to the bar in 1975, and was a fancy high-priced lawyer for more than 40 years, but when he was in charge of hiring for the firm he preferred applicants who had been camp counsellors to ones with good grades. No amount of work ever kept him from missing one of Emily's swim meets or one of Matthew or Paul's high school basketball games. In his youth, Jim was an enthusiastic and daring waterskiier. He has the distinction of being the first person to return to the Quebec Pee Wee hockey tournament as a coach, having also played in it as a 12-yr-old. And he retained a fierce resistance to green vegetables long into adulthood. Jim loved his cottage, and he loved being there to see his family enjoy it. Most of all he loved his friends, his colleagues, his clients, his kids, his daughters and son-in-law, his grandkids, and his wife Catherine of nearly 50 years. He died peacefully after a long and brutal battle with cancer, but he never complained about it once. Jim wasn't one to fuss. Jim is missed deeply and survived by his wife, Catherine (nee Fulton); his sons, Matthew (Shannon Kemp), and Paul (Victoria Wappel); and daughter, Emily Reid (Samuel Reid); and his grandchildren, Nathan, Thomas, Emma, Elijah, Jordan, Hannah and Madison; as well as his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and colleagues. A funeral for Jim will be held at Kingsway Lambton United Church at 85 The Kingsway in Etobicoke at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 28. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation or Dorothy Ley Hospice.

Dear Cade Family:

As the days, weeks and months pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. And above all, by the love of God. Jim was a true mentor and friend. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

My deepest condolences to a man I know is missed. I worked with Jim until 2002 when my designation changed to Estates Law Clerk and I missed him dearly after that. I only just found out about Jim's passing today. He gave the best advice and actually made you think and sort things out in your brain....he was one of the best.

I am saddened that all of us have lost Jim.

When I went into business for myself in the early 90s, I asked my accountant Norm Little for a PRACTICAL (!!!) lawyer. Norm replied that he would mention only one name: Jim Cade.

Later, I was flabbergasted to realize the corporate giants Jim advised, and yet he had time and attention for my very modest needs. Given his hourly rate, I told Jim that my goal was to be his smallest client. Yet he treated me like his biggest.

He had a magical ability to make everyone feel like the most important person he'd ever met.

I was blessed with a few of his private lunches at Hy's. Throughout the meal, he often answered his phone or replied to texts - but always very briefly - a minute or less. Normally, this would annoy me. But Jim could make it endearing ... as I watched how he just loved, loved, loved to help people and, even at lunch, just couldn't help himself.

And I loved to hear Jim share stories about his beloved Lake of Bays.

Not just the most practical lawyer I've ever met - truly one of the kindest.

Rest in Peace, Jim.

He was and will always be one of my favourite people at the firm. Fantastic leader, practical advisor, excellent mentor (even to a kid from Montreal) and all around great guy who never took himself too seriously. I will miss our chats, his guidance and the endless laughs we had anytime we crossed paths. Jim, you will be so missed. While I won´t be able to attend the service, you are in my thoughts. Deepest condolences and sympathies to his family. Steve K

Surprised and sorry to hear of Jim's passing.
We were privileged to enjoy perhaps the best years of young lives
at law school with Jim ( and Cathy on social occasions ). I can still remember him singing the 'Old Osgood Owls with there hoots and their howls '!

Emily and family, I remember like it was yesterday how proud Jim was when you worked at the office. His laugh was infectious and he taught me so much about life. From when he delivered a grate of grapefruit to my house and talked BBQ and camp to when we worked on Big Important Files and then when he warned me "little kids, little problems kiddo". Jim was one of the most authentic good people I ever had the privilege to know. May his memory be a blessing forever and always,

To the Cade Family, please accept our sincere and heartfelt condolences. Jim will be dearly missed. A solid lawyer and mentor to many he truly was larger than life. Upon hearing of his passing, we both remembered having dinner with Jim at a work function years ago, he was the life of the party, with many a story to tell and a smile on his face. That is how we will remember him.

I was incredibly saddened yesterday to learn of Jim´s passing. My sincerest sympathy to you his family and friends. I was a partner at Norton Rose till retirement a few years ago and had the good fortune to work on many client matters with him and his team. It was always interesting and all the more so given Jim´s wisdom, knowledge and kindness to everyone he worked and dealt with. Outside of work, I enjoyed talking with Jim about New Zealand and my trip there- he loved it and its wild less travelled areas. A sadder world without Jim- May he Rest In Peace and family be comforted in knowing how much Jim was admired and cared for.

My sincere condolences to Jim's family. Quite simply, everyone at the firm knew Jim. Given its size, few hold that status. It speaks volumes to his big personality and to the kind of esteemed colleague that he was.

To Jim´s family I was saddened to see notice of his passing in the Globe and Mail. I met him when I was first entered the real estate business in the early 80s. He was such a gentle and caring man always willing to take the time to share his knowledge and wisdom, not because he wanted you to be impressed but because he wanted to share and help others learn. I am sure his family will miss him immensely. My condolences.

So sorry to hear the news of Jim´s passing. Although we were only a there for a sliver of the last chapter of his full life, he made an indelible impression as a man so incredibly proud of his family. We shared many chats outside the dressing room after a game or waiting for the lice check at Muskoka Woods ( thx Paul). He was easy to talk with, humble, funny, but my biggest takeaway was his huge love of family.
Rest In Peace Jim, in your honour I will continue on your fierce resistance to green vegetables.

Cathie and Cade family please accept my condolences and sympathy. Proud to say Jim was a friend and our companies lawyer for the past 25 years going back to the Meighen Demers days. Enjoyed numerous lunches over the years where we would talk baseball and Jim would keep me up to speed on the Cade family. Thank you Jim for solid counsel and most of all your friendship. May you Rest In Peace. Sincerely-Shawn Stone
