JAMES HALLIDAY DAY MD, FRCP(C), FACP EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE, QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY On Monday, January 24, 2011 in Kingston with his family by his side. Beloved husband of Maureen Briscoe and loving father of Jennifer and son-in-law Trevor Turnbull. Proud Grandpa of Aidan and Ryan. Will be missed by brother David (Bernice) and twin brother Richard (Sheila) and their families. Graduate Queen's University (1953) and McGill University (Medicine 1959). Following international fellowships Dr. Day returned to Queen's University in 1967 where he combined clinical practice, teaching and research. Dr. Day's research interests included studies into controlled antigen challenge in assessment of anti allergic treatment, indoor air quality and asthma as well as the immunological basis of risk indices in bee sting allergy. Following studies on Urea Formaldehyde Foam Insulation, he developed the Environmental Exposure Unit (EEU) with Prof. Reginald Clark, and continued research using this internationally recognized facility enjoying the association of an outstanding team including his wife Maureen Briscoe MD, FRCP(C) who served as the co-investigator. Subsequently, The Division of Allergy and Immunology at Kingston General Hospital assumed a significant international leadership role for the acceptance of the EEU as a model for allergy research under controlled conditions, and it is considered to be the gold standard for investigative units of this type worldwide. Dr. Day authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and served as the principal author of seven book chapters. In 2002 an endowed Chair in Allergic Diseases and Allergy Research was created in his name at Queen's University. Dr. Day served in many leadership roles throughout his lifetime and received multiple awards both in his professional life and as a steward of the environment not only on Wolfe Island but across Canada. Friends will be received at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, on Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A memorial service will be held at Sydenham Street United Church, 82 Sydenham Street, Kingston on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Reverend Dr. Jean Stairs officiating. Dr. Day was a strong supporter of the World Wildlife Fund, Nature Conservancy of Canada and Ducks Unlimited and if you wish contributions may be made in his memory.
