Hi,
Firstly, I am sorry for the delay in writing this. I only just came to know that James had passed, which was incredibly sad news to hear. I am a resident physician in dermatology who was fortunate enough to have met James while I was on my rotation at the NIH in January a few months before my graduation. I came across this page because, in all honesty, he left such an impact that I checked the James Hammond Fund page every so often to get updates, even though I had returned to Georgetown at the end of the month.
James and I developed a good rapport early on I think in large part because we were nearly the same age. I was absolutely floored by how bright, kind, and most strikingly - optimistic and strong he was. He always had a smile on his face and always laughed at my jokes (and cracked them himself). Despite it being very clear he could never give up his battle, he was also real and honest about what it was like to be so young and face a diagnosis so grave. I knew that his chances were slim, and I dreaded the day my search would bring me to this news. Considering the positive impact he made on me in two office visits, I cannot imagine what the loss must feel like to those who had the fortune of knowing and loving him. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Dearest Jo-Anne and Richard, Amanda and Paul. Valerie and I are so sorry for your loss. James was truly a force of nature. I think back to the earliest times when we met James through baseball. There he was standing on the mound, pitching with his long curly blonde hair. He was such a talented, and engaging presence. It was an honour to have known him. And also an honour to meet and know those he loved.

James will be incredibly missed. He was truly one of the greatest men that I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was such an incredible husband, son and friend to all. My heart pours out to the Hammond family. I know he will be looking down on us. Forever the Hammond's guardian angel.

A light has gone out. James was far too young to leave us. My thoughts are with the entire Hammond family, and I'm sending big hugs to my dear friend, Jo-Anne.
